During the Microsoft E3 2019 press conference, it was revealed that Phantasy Star Online 2 would finally be released in the west, an announcement that comes seven years after the launch of PSO2 in Japan. While the reveal of the Phantasy Star Online 2 U.S. release confirmed that the title would indeed be coming to Xbox One and PC, there is now indication that the MMORPG will be headed to other platforms as well.

Speaking with Jeff Gerstmann of Giant Bomb, the head of the Xbox brand, Phil Spencer, touched on Phantasy Star Online 2 and offered details on its release platforms, specifically stating that PSO2 "will end up on all platforms." While the exact meaning of "all platforms" was not clarified, it does seem that western fans will not only have the opportunity to play Phantasy Star Online 2 on Xbox One and PC, but, potentially, on PlayStation 4 and Switch as well.

To note, the reveal trailer for the Phantasy Star Online 2 U.S. release emphasized that the game would support "online action combat with cross-play." At the time of the announcement of the Phantasy Star Online 2 western release, this statement seemed to suggest that players would be able to team up across Xbox One and PC. However, following Spencer's statement, it is possible that the scope of Phantasy Star Online 2 cross-play support is more extensive than that.

During his conversation with Giant Bomb, Spencer also expressed his affinity for Phantasy Star Online, indicating that he "happens to have a soft spot" for it and believes that the Phantasy Star franchise "can be a meaningful." Certainly, giving players across many platforms access to the western release of Phantasy Star Online 2 would make it more likely for the franchise to become "meaningful," and it seems like offering this extended access is exactly what Sega intends to do.

Unfortunately, Spencer was not able to confirm if Phantasy Star Online 2 will be made available in areas like Europe and the Middle East, saying that "Sega's ultimately responsible for it." That said, the indication that the PSO2 U.S. release will be available across a myriad of platforms seems to suggest that Sega wants to make the MMO available to a great a number of fans, and this access could be offered to other regions some time in the future.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is in development for "all platforms" and releases, in the west, in spring 2020 for PC and Xbox One.
