Gamers that also happen to be fans of golf didn't have a very eventful 2014, as Electronic Arts announced that it would be taking a year off from Tiger Woods PGA Tour in what many assumed to be a bid to avoid franchise fatigue. Now the company has confirmed that the series will be making its triumphant return in 2015, but this time around it'll be ditching its long-standing cover star for current PGA superstar Rory McIlroy.

Being rebranded as Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, the new title will be the first EA Sports golf title to arrive on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While the absence of Tiger Woods' name from the PGA Tour series was something that consumers were informed would be happening, many fans were left wondering just which professional golfer (if any) would have their name plastered across the title of this year's anticipated PGA Tour installment. In hindsight, McIlroy was the obvious choice.

Currently rated the number one golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy has achieved a number of noteworthy accomplishments in his young career. At just 25 years old, the pro golfer has already won four major golfing championships – including the PGA Championship twice – and it doesn't appear that the athlete will be slowing down the rate of his accomplishments at any point in the near future.

Putting the new cover athlete aside, not much else is known about the forthcoming Rory McIlroy PGA Tour other than the fact that it will be built using EA's Frostbite Engine. Based on the numerous titles that have been built on the engine, as well as the brief teaser trailer that accompanied the big announcement, golf aficionados should be in for a very solid looking treat when they pop the forthcoming PGA Tour game into their current-gen platforms later this year.

What do you think about Tiger Woods getting the boot? Is Rory McIlroy a suitable replacement in your opinion?
