Persona 5 Royal passed yet another incredible milestone, with Sega reporting that the remastered edition of the game reached 1.7 million in global sales. The latest version of Persona 5 Royal released to overwhelmingly positive reviews on October 21, 2022.

Atlus previously revealed that the Persona 5 Royal remaster hit a million sales within five weeks of its launch. In light of this latest update, it would appear that the game managed to nearly double its worldwide sales over the first quarter of 2023.

This is all according to Sega's newest financial report, which attributes the game's maintained commercial momentum to the publisher's decision to opt for a multiplatform launch. Sega isn't in the habit of breaking down its game sales reports by platform, although it previously confirmed that the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal broke sales records in both the U.S. and Europe. Since the 1.7 million figure was specifically attached to the remastered edition of the game, it encompasses every platform except for the PS4.

Sega's previous-quarter results offer a bit more context to this newly reported milestone; back in October, the Japanese publisher revealed that the Persona franchise surpassed 15.5 million in lifetime sales. Meaning that the remastered edition of Persona 5 Royal is responsible for around 10% of that figure, while the game itself is likely a much greater contributor to the series' overall success.

As for what's next for the Persona franchise, recent rumors pointed in the direction of a full-fledged remake of the third game. Not least because some highly convincing gameplay footage from an alleged Persona 3 remake leaked online in early April. While a remastered edition of Persona 3 Portable only launched in October alongside the multiplatform version of Persona 5 Royal, this would hardly be the first occasion on which Atlus decided to double-dip with one of its hit RPGs. After all, PlayStation gamers recently had to pay full price for the Persona 5 Royal PS5 upgrade even if they already owned the PS4 version of the game.

Beyond that, Atlus already confirmed that the much-anticipated sixth installment in the franchise is already in development back in July 2021. However, the company has shared no Persona 6 news ever since. Many fans are hoping this will finally change come next month, when Atlus holds its 30th anniversary celebration of the overarching Shin Megami Tensei series. The company already hinted at some announcements coming out of the May 5 event, though this wouldn't be the first time that fans got their hopes up for what turned out to be a spinoff reveal in the vein of Persona 5 Strikers.

Persona 5 Royal is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
