The Persona series has been running for a long time now, gradually rising in the west, going from a cult classic to gaining widespread popularity. This popularity is now evident with Persona 5 Royal, the expanded ultimate version of the game, according to a new report from Sega.

Persona 5 details the story of the Phantom Thieves who set out to use the metaverse to take down those who do evil but are outside the reach of the law. Its sequel, Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers, recently released in Japan.

A new financial results briefing covering the fiscal year briefly touched on the sales of Persona 5 Royal in the west. According to Sega, Persona 5 Royal achieved "record sales" and the company is seeing a significant increase in the number of digital sales which have continued into the next fiscal year.

Although the company didn't provide any exact numbers as to how many copies Persona 5 Royal has sold in Europe and the United States, it seems that the sales may have surpassed what Sega was expecting. The game premiered at the end of March 2020 as the fifth-highest selling game in the United States, which is especially notable since there were several popular releases around this time, including the sales record shattering Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The sales of Persona 5 Royal are particularly remarkable since it's the third release of the game, with it originally launching on the PS3 back in 2016. Persona 5 Royal also shipped 400,000 copies in Japan during its first month alone. For it to still achieve considerable sales despite many players having already explored the original story is impressive.

This may bode well for Persona 5 Scramble coming to the west, as well. So far, there hasn't been an official confirmation that the game's action-oriented follow-up will be translated into English, although a Koei Tecmo report alluded to an international release. In fact, Atlus West previously released a survey attempting to determine if a western audience would even be interested in the sequel. Regardless of the results of the survey, hopefully these sales numbers will make it clear to the developer that there's an eager audience waiting to see more of the Phantom Thieves.
