Goro Akechi has never stopped being a divisive character for Persona 5 players, with him very much falling into the 'love him or hate him' category. It makes it that less surprising that he would be trending around Twitter with the hashtag #GoodbyeGoro.

This recent hashtag however has nothing to do with Akechi's words and actions during the events of Persona 5. Rather, it is due to a recent fan-made poll where Persona fans can vote on their favorite characters throughout the Persona series.

The fan-poll that is calculating all of these results and presenting them is a Twitter account going by @PersonaAward. The polls themselves are called the Persona Awards 2021, with round two being the round to cause this hashtag surrounding Akechi to trend.

Round two's fourth match had four different polls for character popularity, where two characters were put up against each other. Yusuke Kitagawa was put up against Tae Takemi, Mitsuru Kirijo was against Akihiko Sanada, Naoto Shirogane was against Goro Akechi, and Yosuke Hanamura was against Shinjiro Aragaki. In these cases, Yusuke, Akihiko, Naoto, and Yosuke all turned out as the winners.

Many were surprised to see Akechi lose the poll, with many others being excited for  Persona's original detective prince to come out on top. Many of Akechi's fans in turn created the hashtag #GoodbyeGoro to mourn his relatively early loss in the 2021 Persona awards. A number of these fans have also changed their icon to an edit of Akechi bleeding that was created by Twitter user @irlgoroakechi.

Searching this tag will yield eulogy videos, fan art, and people outside of the Persona fanbase confusing Goro Akechi for Goro Majima from Yakuza and Goro from Mortal Kombat. In response to the trending tag, the Persona Awards Twitter account gave Akechi an honorary victory for managing to become number five on Twitter's trending tags. This, however, will not let him go forward in the polls and will still allow Naoto Shirogane to move on to round three.

In addition to all of the Goro Akechi love being spread throughout Twitter, this trending hashtag has also brought a lot of attention over to the Persona Awards and will likely result in more votes coming in future rounds. It is very unlikely that another character will shake Twitter like Goro Akechi, but anything can happen involving these polls as what has been already seen from the Persona 5 fanbase.
