The Convenience Store is an interesting location in Persona 5. It’s where players can obtain a part-time job and also where valuable items are sold. As a result, the player will spend at least some of their time in this JRPG at this location.
To get the most out of this place it’s important to know what are the perks and benefits of working and shopping here. There is a compelling reason to spend some time here and a strong case why the player shouldn’t linger here too long.
Updated April 15th, 2021 by Ben Baker: While the Convenience Store isn’t the best job out there it does give players a good start and provides some helpful items for progressing. In the early game players will be strapped for cash and healing items and the Convenience Store is a good place to get both. It’s also worth noting that two Mementos are unlocked by working here. In light of this it seemed necessary to update some of the information on this list and clarify a few things so player know exactly what to do and expect from working at the Convenience Store.
10 It's Easy To Get A Job At The Convenience Store
Once the player starts Persona 5 the Convenience Store is automatically the easiest job to obtain. As long as the date is sometime after April 20th the player can walk in and get a job.
There’s no stat requirements, no special missions to complete, no hoops whatsoever. If the player character has a pulse and it’s later than April 20th the job is there’s. If the player is looking for a job and hasn’t qualified for anything else than the Convenience Store is a great place to put in a few shifts.
9 Work Day Or Night
The player can decide whether they want to work a night shift or a day shift at the Convenience Store. This provides some flexibility if the player has things they need to do at other times of the day. It can also help with players who need the money more than anything else.
Any shift, day or night, is going to be a part-time shift so the player should keep this in mind as well. This flexibility can be appealing when the player is figuring out their early game routine and needs to be able to choose their hours.
8 Convenience Store Salary Isn't Much, But It's Money
The most basic perk for working at this location is the salary. A shift at the Convenience Store will pay out 3,500 Yen on average working days, on Royal it’s 2,800. It’s not a lot, but for early game players it can help them get a few items.
On busy days the player can get paid 7,400 Yen. Still not a lot compared to other jobs and these days happen less often, but it’s a decent chunk of change in the beginning. It should also be noted that players can make extra money during special events.
7 Calling For Justice For Cats
The Mementos mission Calling For Justice For Cats can only be unlocked if the player is working at the Convenience Store. On August 11th the player will get a text message from Mishima initiating the mission.
But the player will need to put in three shifts at the Convenience Store to get the necessary information about the target. For many players this is the primary reason to work at the Convenience Store.
6 My Cat’s Death Left A Lingering Grudge
Working at the Convenience Store three times will also unlock the side mission My Cat’s Death Left A Lingering Grudge. It’s another Memento and will trigger in August sometime. Like the other mission the player needs to have three shifts logged at the Convenience Store.
One tactic players have used for both missions is to log two shifts at the Convenience Store and wait for the text. Once it comes through they put in a third shift which allows them to get to the Mementos sooner.
5 *Special Events Happen At The Convenience Store
Special Events can be a nice change of pace that come with certain perks. The player will be faced with a quiz-type challenge that has them inform customers of where the barcode is on certain items in the Convenience Store. These events occur on the 7th, 17th, and 27th.
If the player has been paying attention its not terribly difficult the barcodes are located, but the special events can get annoying at times. It’s recommended the player pay attention to the barcode locations, pull up a guide, or simply take the hit as the penalties aren’t too bad.
4 Special Event Perks
Successfully completing a special event can reward the player with a +1 to their Charm social stat. The player will also receive 3,800 Yen. So it pays for the player to note where barcodes are and get the questions right.
Failing will still net the player 2,300 Yen, but the Charm stat will take a hit. Each wrong answer causes the character to lose -1 to their Charm stat. It’s not hard to regain Charm, but it can get annoying. The extra cash and Charm boost can be handy for beginning players.
3 Confidants Drop By The Convenience Store
The final perk that comes from working at the Convenience Store is that Confidants will randomly drop by. Whenever they do so the player has a chance to receive a +1 boost to their relationship with that Confidant.
It’s not clear what triggers an encounter as the moments seem entirely randomly, there also doesn’t seem to be a specific day they’ll appear. Players should consider this a helpful bonus for working at the Convenience Store rather than a viable farming tactic.
2 The Convenience Store Sells Healing Items
If the player visits the Convenience Store as a customer they’ll find a number of helpful items for sale. The items available will depend on what time of the year it is. In the beginning the player will have access to Karaage, Jagariko, and Exotic Meat Bun. Each of which are under 200 Yen and can restore up to 20 HP for an ally.
As time goes by the items get more expensive and offer better healing. On January 13th the player can purchase Limited New Year Chocolate. It costs a whopping 3 thousand Yen and will fully restore the HP of all allies. Unfortunately the player doesn’t receive an employee discount for working there.
1 Get The Mementos And Move On
Perhaps the best advice players should take away regarding the Convenience Store is that it’s meant to be a temporary job. Any of the other jobs available in the game offer better pay and better rewards. For instance, the Crossroads Bar pays 5,400 Yen a shift and allows the player to boost any stat they want.
Player should spend at least two shifts here and a third shift when they receive the text regarding the Memento quests. After completing those two missions there’s little reason to stay at this job. So while it can help in the beginning the player really should focus on qualifying for a better job and move on to better work as soon as they can.
