Amazon Prime Video has revealed the first trailer for the upcoming sci-fi series The Peripheral. The series stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a young woman who finds herself transported to another reality after donning a futuristic headset.

Set in the near future, Amazon Prime's The Peripheral centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of America. The trailer for The Peripheral opens with Fisher, who finds herself unsatisfied with her job at a 3-D printing company. She's told that her skills and personality are being wasted, but this life is all she knows. One day she's introduced to a fancy high-tech headset and when she puts it on, she's transported to the sleek and mysterious world of futuristic London. At first, she believes the headset is merely a virtual reality, but it quickly becomes clear that this is so much more.

One day she's introduced to a fancy high-tech headset and when she puts it on, she's transported to the sleek and mysterious world of futuristic London. At first, she believes the headset is merely a virtual reality, but it quickly becomes clear that this is so much more. The trailer for The Peripheral continues as Fisher learns that this virtual reality is more than just a game, it's real, and the headset is actually transporting her to the future. The rest of the trailer shows off some impressive science-fiction imagery, including all manner of cloaking devices and dangerous robot cab drivers.

The Peripheral is the latest sci-fi/fantasy project from Amazon Prime. The streaming service recently released the first two episodes of their massive fantasy show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power, which was reportedly the most expensive TV show ever made. Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by William Gibson, The Peripheral is executive produced and created by Scott Smith and was developed by the creators of the HBO series Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

Gibson is considered a pioneer of the cyberpunk genre, a sub-genre of science fiction that tends to focus on a combination of lowlife and high-tech. His short story Johnny Mnemonic was also adapted into the 1995 film of the same name starring Keanu Reeves. Gibson also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation and while it was particularly well received upon release. In fact, Johnny Mnemonic is often regarded as a '90s cult classic and a staple in the cyberpunk genre.

Moretz is best known for her feature film roles in the superhero franchise Kick-Ass. She starred as Hit-Girl in the 2010 adaptation of the Mark Millar comic, and she reprised her role for the 2013 sequel Kick-Ass 2. She is also known for her roles in Martin Scorsese's Hugo and the 2018 drama The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

The Peripheral will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on October 21st, 2022.
