Production on Percy Jackson and the Olympians is well underway, and it seems the series already has a fan in author Rick Riordan himself. The author has sung the praises of the series prior to its debut on Disney Plus.

When Disney shared the first Percy Jackson and the Olympians series details, it promised that the show would be more closely aligned with the books by Riordan. The previous film adaptations took several detours from the source material, which made them contested entries by fans. Even Riordan spoke out about some of the changes made to the series. Riordan is, however, much more involved with Disney Plus' iteration of the franchise.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Riordan joined Walker Scobell, who plays Percy Jackson, Leah Jeffries, who plays Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri, who plays Grover Underwood. “The tv format is one of the things I love the most because it gives us time and space to tell the whole story of the book The Lightning Thief in a way that’s a little more true to what I wrote," said Riordan, who serves as a writer and executive producer on the show. "I think it’s what the fans have been waiting for. And it’s just so great that I can finally tell all the readers over the years ‘this is it! This is the adaptation you’ve been wanting and waiting for.’”

It’s high praise from Riordan and indicates that the Disney Plus series is already doing better than the Percy Jackson movies, at least in his eyes. The previously-released Percy Jackson films made some big changes to the source material, including aging the characters up so that the series would appeal more to teens. The film franchise is usually noted as one the fans did not really warm up to.

As Riordan acknowledges, he came up with the series as a story for his son before any of the current actors were even born. This means that the series has now become a bonafide source of nostalgia for audiences, probably incentivizing a faithful adaptation. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser showed fans a glimpse of what was to come, and it looked promising. Camp Half-Blood, in particular, seems like it will be faithfully brought to life in the series.

Scobell, who starred in The Adam Project, also seems a promising pick for Percy. While Logan Lerman, who portrayed Percy in the films, has gone on to be a celebrated actor in his own right, Scobell is a bit more age-appropriate for the role. He’s also a tested choice, as many praised his acting in The Adam Project, calling it a strong start for a child actor.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in 2024.
