In a new video posted on YouTube, the independent developers from TeaserPlay reveal a concept trailer for an open world Peaky Blinders game built in Unreal Engine 5. The trailer shows off characters and locations from the popular British crime drama and provides a tantalizing glimpse of what it would be like to explore the show’s version of 1920s Birmingham, England.

Set in England following the First World War, Peaky Blinders follows Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby and his Peaky Blinders gang as they grow their criminal organization in Birmingham and beyond. Loosely inspired by a real-life Birmingham youth gang of the same name that operated during that time period, the show became a hit with viewers and critics alike and recently finished its sixth and final season. A spin-off film based on the series is in the works, and London-based developer Maze Theory is creating a Peaky Blinders VR game titled Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom set for release later this year.

The brief trailer opens with Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby walking through Birmingham’s Little Italy neighborhood, giving TeaserPlay a chance to show off the remarkably detailed environments they’ve created for the demo. From city streets with vintage cars on the road and era-appropriate advertisements adorning the buildings, to dark and dingy industrial areas with lights shining out from cracked warehouse windows, TeaserPlay make great use of Unreal Engine 5 to display a game world that feels lived-in and looks appropriately grimy. This trailer doesn’t mark the first time Peaky Blinders fans have used games to pay tribute to the series, with one fan earlier this year posting a recreation of the Peaky Blinders intro sequence made entirely in Red Ded Redemption 2.

Although the trailer doesn’t show much as far as gameplay for the hypothetical Peaky Blinders title, the detailed recreation of early 20th-century Birmingham looks like it would provide a refreshing change of pace from the modern-day settings of many open world crime games. With Grand Theft Auto 6 likely several years away, and with some gamers still stinging from the poorly received release of the Saints Row reboot, an open world game set in the Peaky Blinders universe could make for a unique take on the GTA formula if one were ever to be released.

With Hollywood increasingly using the Unreal Engine to create digital sets on productions like The Mandalorian and The Batman, it’s not surprising to see fans using that same technology to recreate some of their favorite shows and movies. Fan trailers like this one, and another made for a hypothetical open world Game of Thrones game, show that gamers have a real desire to explore the worlds they’ve come to love from movies and TV. As games based on these properties begin to be made using Unreal Engine 5, gamers may soon be able to explore some of their favorite fictional worlds at a scale and level of detail that was previously unimaginable.
