Finally, the brand new calendar year arrives with a new full-length red band trailer for the Peacemaker spin-off series, set after James Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad, where the charater made his initial debut. The new pieces of footage from Peacemaker are packed with all the trimmings of an engaging experience, riddled with action, four-letter word bombs, and the humor one has become accustomed to within Gunn's stylistic approach.

The series picks up where the post-credits scene from The Suicide Squad left audiences, with the sudden revelation that Peacemaker had surprisingly survived what appeared to be a fatal shooting. The protagonist and his newly formed team look to keep the world safer and tranquil, even if it means causing some minor damage, to ensure that the central idea of peace comes to fruition. The new trailer dishes out a fresh look at the newly assembled Peacemaker cast of characters and the unique, charismatic humor they'll be bringing to the action-filled rollercoaster. Gunn, who penned all eight episodes for the HBO Max series, appears to be delivering the same violent and clever, comical approach to the stage once more.

The Peacemaker trailer opens with the protagonist making an out-of-the-ordinary appearance at an elementary school, pompously relaying to the students a story of how he "defeated the world's most dangerous villains," intermixed with cut scenes of the vigilante doing what he does best. However, the glass ceiling surrounding the somewhat charming moment shatters once a student proceeds to ask if the character had ever crossed paths with the iconic Wonder Woman. Here audiences can see the humoristic nature of the series through his description of the questionable encounter where he states, "She did spend an entire party eye effin' me from across the room." Once the fuse ignites, the Peacemaker trailer doesn't remotely let up, following a similar pattern of chaotic hilarity to highlight the mechanics behind the narrative's inner workings. The created atmosphere appears to be enthralling, but audiences will have to wait to see if the antics will translate fluidly into each episode.

While John Cena takes center stage as the series's main protagonist, the Peacemaker trailer highlights some engaging and hilarious moments from the secondary characters. Danielle Brooks, who plays Adebayo, carries a natural air of humor that balances well with her fellow co-stars. Her belief in her stellar weapons and combat skills is genuinely comical, especially when mixed within moments that showcase the complete opposite. Other moments carry a similar tune, such as the torture sequence involving Peacemaker and Vigilante, but the violence is the central element this trailer brings to life. The images are brutal in moments but equally laughable because of the circumstances in which they occur. The profanity-laced sequences are high-octane with energy, which could only be a tease of what's to come further.

The plot of the series is relatively unknown, but the breadcrumbs that have risen to the surface reveal that Peacemaker and his band of misfits will attempt to save the world from some new villains. The trailer doesn't offer much in terms of context, but it does reveal the tone one can expect from this series. The fun-loving nature is visibly there within each moment, but will it find the balance it needs to make Peacemaker a character worth revisiting? The most appealing characteristic rooted within the hero is his atypical style, motivated by the idea of peace but struggling with the concept himself. The humor and violent nature of the narrative will ultimately be the attraction that brings people through the door, but there has to be a humanistic approach to the character that makes him someone worth rooting for in the end.

Gunn revealed that three Peacemaker episodes would land on the streaming platform once the series premieres, which will provide audiences some insight into the direction of the narrative. Like most promotional rollouts, the trailer highlights the best and loudest elements to perk the ears of those who will listen. The DC Universe has an exciting lineup of projects to be released within the new year, and Peacemaker looks to get the party started compellingly.

Peacemaker will land on HBO Max January 13, 2022.
