Ever since James Gunn's The Suicide Squad premiered, fans have been waiting for the story to continue in the HBO Max series Peacemaker. To increase the hype for the show, the streaming service released a sizzle reel on Sunday evening that offers viewers their first look at John Cena’s fan-favorite character in his own spin-off series.

The brief look at HBO Max’s Peacemaker was a part of a longer video that highlighted some of the streaming service’s upcoming projects, which includes the next installment in The Matrix franchise. The video was aired during the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards and has fans talking about Gunn’s next project on social media.

The few seconds of footage in HBO Max’s sizzle reel, which was shared by the streamer on multiple social media platforms, do not confirm the timeline of the series, but rather pokes fun at Peacemaker’s outfit. Before The Suicide Squad premiered, Cena appeared for several interviews in his Peacemaker costume. There was a running joke between him and Gunn about how Cena needs to stop stealing the costume from the sets. The joke seems to continue in the newly released footage of Peacemaker, with Cena’s character appearing at a restaurant in his costume. When asked by Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt why he was wearing his costume, he replies that it is “a uniform.”

Even though the Peacemaker footage is quite short, it is enough to give fans an idea of the tone that the series will maintain. It seems like Cena’s character will be as equally quirky and flamboyant as he was in The Suicide Squad, and his team will just have to deal with his antics.

While it isn’t confirmed if Peacemaker will pick up after the events of The Suicide Squad or work as a prequel, fan expectations are already quite high. In recent interviews, Gunn was mysterious about the timeline of events, as well. He did confirm that fans will learn about where Peacemaker comes from and his relationship with his father, who is played by Robert Patrick in the upcoming series. But, it will also reflect on where he is going after everything he has been through, possibly including the events of The Suicide Squad.

Apart from Peacemaker, the sizzle reel released by HBO Max also teases several other upcoming projects, including Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex and the City, and Gossip Girl, and films like King Richard, Dune, and The Matrix Resurrections. The latter is something that a lot of fans have been looking forward to as well, especially because the last installment in The Matrix franchise was released back in 2003.

Peacemaker is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in January 2022.
