Director James Gunn has confirmed that filming of the first season of his upcoming Peacemaker series has been completed. He took to social media to reveal that after 131 days, HBO Max’s spin-off series has wrapped its shoot. The series stars John Cena as the Peacemaker, a character who fans will first get to see later this year in Gunn’s upcoming film The Suicide Squad.

Gunn also used the opportunity to appreciate the cast and crew that worked alongside him on the project. “Thank you for putting your hearts and souls into this project,” he wrote. The idea of the Peacemaker spin-off series was first pitched by Gunn less than a year ago, something he confirms in his latest tweet, and within 11 months, the show for HBO Max has already completed filming.

Gunn has written the script for all eight episodes of the first season of Peacemaker and has even directed five of them. He recently revealed the names of the other directors who were officially brought on to direct an episode of the anticipated series. They include Jody Hill, known for HBO’s Eastbound & Down, Brad Anderson, who previously worked on Fringe, and Rosemary Rodriguez, who has worked on Jessica Jones and AMC's The Walking Dead

Even though filming is complete, details about the plot of the series are still being kept under wraps. The only piece of information that fans are aware of is that Peacemaker will work as an origin story of the character who will be introduced in the upcoming The Suicide Squad, which premieres in less than a month. There is no confirmation on whether there or not there will be a second season, but Gunn has already thought of any potential DC Comics characters he would include in the series if a season 2 was approved.

Apart from Cena, the series stars Steve Agee as John Economos, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Christopher Heyerdahl as Captain Locke, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith, and Freddie Stroma as Vigilante.

The news of Peacemaker completing filming also has Marvel fans excited, because this means that Gunn will now turn his focus to the highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director had earlier revealed that he would begin shooting the third installment in the Guardians franchise as soon as he was done filming Peacemaker. Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord in the Guardians franchise, had also stated in a recent interview that the film would enter production later this year.

Peacemaker is currently expected to premiere on HBO Max in January 2022.
