Good news for PC gamers, Id Software Creative Director Tim Willits has confirmed that RAGE on PC will ship with full modding and level design editing.

According to Tim all gamers and would-be modders will need to do is, “Pull down the console, type ‘id studio’, then press enter. Then, bam, there’s all the tools we use.”

The level editor is built right into RAGE. That does not mean, however, that modders will be able to jump in and create millions of their own levels to play and share. Though, this limitation is not because id isn't providing the tools - but rather because id's technology has advanced a lot since the early Doom and Quake days. Accordingly, building RAGE levels from scratch will simply be more difficult.

But if a modder or group of modders has the development skills and abilities, the game's tools will be there for them to play with. That is certainly good news. Giving the community the tools, wherever possible, is almost always a good choice. Sure, it might be harder to build levels from scratch but if any community can pull it off, it is likely the PC-gaming community. The amazing things professional, semi-professional, and hobby modders and programmers have put-together over the years in id and other popular PC shooters is inspiring to say the least.

Hopefully the creativity and community continues with RAGE, even if the single player and multiplayer portions of the game seem substantial on their own. More fun, unique, and creative content is always a good thing.

What is your take? Do you think you have what it takes to build some totally custom RAGE levels? Do you think it will actually be difficult for modders to work with id's new tech? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

RAGE will be available on September 13, 2011, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
