‘Left 4 Dead’ / ‘Payday: The Heist’ Crossover In Development

Payday: The Heist Left 4 Dead Crossover

Those who played 2011’s PAYDAY: The Heist may have noticed that the game bears some resemblance to Left 4 Dead, despite the absence of zombies. The two IPs are about to become even more intertwined, as Overkill and Valve are working on a PAYDAY: The Heist/Left 4 Dead crossover!

Rumors of the crossover first began to spread when players noticed a few “hints” in PAYDAY, referencing Valve’s Left 4 Dead franchise. Today, Overkill Software‘s Ulf Andersson confirmed that his studio is indeed working on a crossover, and that it will be “a very cool blend of PAYDAY and Left 4 Dead.” Andersson did not mention whether or not this will be a full game, or an expansion for PAYDAY and/or Left 4 Dead.

Valve‘s role in the crossover’s development isn’t thoroughly explained. It’s likely that the studio is advising Overkill on what can and can’t be done with the Left 4 Dead IP, but aside from that, how much of the game Valve is actually crafting is anyone’s guess.

“As perceptive gamers will have noticed, several hints have recently been dropped into PAYDAY The Heist, which has led to various rumors. We are excited to be able to confirm that an in-depth collaboration between OVERKILL and Valve is currently in production.”

“We are working on a very cool blend of PAYDAY and Left 4 Dead. I am sure it is so exciting that it will have some players check into the hospital before we are done.”

Andersson did not say which platforms to expect the crossover on, but it will be interesting to see whether or not this new game/expansion makes it to the PlayStation 3. Sony worked hard to advertise PAYDAY, even offering it in the PSN Play promotion. Still, there has yet to be a Left 4 Dead game on the PS3 — though thanks to Valve’s new-found love for Sony’s platform, that could end up being a moot-point.

When we reviewed PAYDAY: The Heist last year, we thought it was an admirable effort, though the PS3 version suffered from some matchmaking issues. With those fixed up, the game is certainly worth playing. Hopefully, players on both PS3 and PC will be able to check out this new expansion pack. We’re just wondering what the crossover will entail: Stealing from a bank run by zombies? Playing as zombies stealing from a bank run by humans? We don’t know, but we can’t wait to find out!

The PAYDAY: The Heist/Left 4 Dead crossover is currently in development for unspecified platforms.
