Giant Squid, creators of Abzu, has announced that not only will The Pathless be available on PS4 and PS5, but its area loading system will offer players a complete, seamless experience.

Patrick Quah of Giant Squid describes The Pathless as "a mythic adventure game." The studio aimed to put together a new game that not only gives players a beautiful world to explore, but the experience of bonding with a bird of prey, just like falconers who still hunt small game today.

The trailer was released in December of 2018, and even back then it was gorgeous. At the time, The Pathless was expected to be a PS4 release. PS5's emerging technology has since opened new doors for Giant Squid to bring their game to life. The DualSense controller's haptic feedback is one piece of tech that makes the PS5 version especially appealing. "It’ll let you feel the heartbeat of our world," says Creative Director Matt Nava.

Players can expect gameplay that is as smooth as silk, even with enormous landscapes overshadowed by a floating island with red hot magma peeking out from the crumbling rock hanging beneath it. Giant Squid wants to give players a sense that they are navigating an open and living world. From the very beginning, they aimed to make a game that did away with loading screens and instead had a seamless world to explore.

The main character known simply as the Hunter is a master archer, so Giant Squid has made handling the weapon as simple as possible. The bow and arrow is not reticle based like most games that contain archery, such as Skyrim. Instead, players will have to rely on timing their sprinting and jumping in order to maximize the impact of their arrows. They will need to explore in the shadow of the floating mountain and the dark influence it has cast. Corrupted spirits and beasts roam the land, and secrets lie waiting to be discovered.

It may have been a wait, but the wait will be worth it. The Pathless may have been one of the games missing from the PS5 event yesterday, but players have been paying attention, and they will appreciate the hard work put into this title.

The Pathless is expected to come out on PS4 and PS5 in late 2020.
