Chapter Three of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous begins just after the crusader forces have retaken the city of Drezen, and opens a bunch of new quests for players to embark upon. One that they'll want to complete quickly is the Dragon Hunt quest, which is given by Irabeth immediately after the siege of Drezen.

In the Dragon Hunt, players must hire the assassin Greybor to track down and kill the powerful red dragon Devarra, who has been feasting on the crusader forces. Although Devarra will be a challenging fight for characters under level 12, there's a good reason for players who are confident in their party to embark on the quest sooner rather than later. At the end of the quest, players will be able to recruit Greybor, allowing him to join the Military Council. If this is done before the Military Council's first meeting, players will be able to upgrade their basic infantry into Spearmen, a balanced middle-ground unit between Regill's tough Shieldbearers and Seelah's glass-cannon Champions.

Pathfinder Wrath Of The Righteous Official Armor Art

Devarra is one of the most lethal enemies in Chapter Three of the Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous campaign, boasting a terrifying fire breath, fire aura, fear effect, and a full attack of bite, wings, and tail. Players should make sure that whatever group they bring counters these strengths.

A strong tank character is important, preferably one with Smite and a fear-protection aura. This makes Seelah the ideal companion, particularly with the spell Aura of Greater Courage, which will make all allies within 30ft of her completely immune to fear.

Players will also want to provide themselves with some form of protection against Devarra's lethal fire breath, which can easily one-hit-kill a character with a failed Reflex save.

The Communal versions of Protection from Energy and Resist Energy are the best defense a party can get, and are available to many of Wrath of the Righteous' caster classes, as well as in scroll and potion form. Other helpful spells include buffs like Haste and True Seeing, the latter of which will allow characters to bypass Devarra's Displacement ability.

Finally, players should prepare for Devarra's absurdly high AC. The average character will only have a 5-15% chance of even damaging the red dragon, so make sure to deactivate features like Power Attack, Piranha Strike, and Deadly Aim in order to maximize attack rolls. In addition, Thundering Blows, the Wrath of the Righteous Mythic Ability which deals damage on a miss, is a great pick for fighting any high-AC enemy, particularly on dual-wielding characters like Greybor, or defense-focused characters like Seelah.

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Grimwood Location

The hunt for Devarra begins with players hiring the Pathfinder Slayer Greybor from the tavern in Drezen for the cost of 1,200 Gold. Next, they'll need to send a Crusader Army west to clear the path to Grimwood, the site of Greybor's planned ambush, before following with the party. Players can expect to be attacked once or twice by Devarra along the road, but she should quickly fly off after realizing that they aren't an easy target.

At Grimwood, Devarra will fall for Greybor's bait, giving players time to buff with their best divine and arcane spells then attack. After reducing her health to 75% Devarra will flee eastward, prompting players to follow to Bloody Trail, and finally to Artisan's Tower. Once again, a Crusader Army may be needed to remove any pesky Demon Armies that are blocking the roads.

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Dead Devarra

When approaching Artisan's Tower, players will be drawn into a series of challenging skill checks. Whether they choose the suspicious bushes or the rocky path, failing the checks will result in damage and the party landing right in front of Devarra's jaws. This will make the fight much harder, while succeeding at the checks will allow Greybor to get a free sneak attack on Devarra while she's distracted by Pathfinder's mysterious Storyteller.

Once the fight begins, players should try to spread out to avoid being caught in Devarra's fire breath, but stay close enough for Seelah's Aura of Greater Courage or Remove Fear spell. With good use of distracting summons and healing magic, it should be possible to keep the party alive long enough for Greybor and the other DPS characters to reduce Devarra to 20% health.

Around the 20% threshold, she will retreat to a higher part of the tower, and prepare to destroy it to make her escape. Players should pursue and use their best spells and Wrath of the Righteous Feats to finish off the dragon for good, as failing to kill her quickly will result in her escaping during the destruction of the tower's library.

Regardless of what happens, the Storyteller will rejoin the crusade at Drezen, and Greybor can be hired as a permanent companion for 12,500 Gold, or 25,000 if Devarra escaped.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is available on PC and will be released on Xbox One and PS4 on March 1, 2022.
