Parasite Eve on PSN

Parasite Eve, the cult classic survival horror role-playing game, will be making its way to the PlayStation Network some time in the future.

The game’s sequel, Parasite Eve 2, will also be making its way to the PlayStation Network for gamers to enjoy.

The announcement comes from the Japanese sector of Square Enix and nothing has been confirmed for North America. However, many expect this part of the world to eventually be privy to the same opportunity at some point, considering Square Enix’s history of worldwide distribution.

Parasite Eve has sold over 1.9 million copies, with 1.05 million sold in Japan alone and 0.89 million sold in North America. In Japan, it was the number 7 top-selling game of 1998. Re-released in North America under Sony’s Greatest Hits label, the cinematic RPG tells the story of Aya Brea, an NYPD rookie. Brea has to deal with an epidemic that causes people to either die or mutate as the mitochondria in their bloodstreams awaken with chaotic energy. Parasite Eve 2 takes place shortly thereafter and shifts most of the first game’s RPG game elements in favor of action-adventure gameplay – similar to the Resident Evil franchise.

Speculation of the first two games in the series coming to the PlayStation Network is probably connected to the release of the third game in the franchise, The 3rd Birthday. Expected to be released in Japan this December – and early 2011 in North America and Europe, The 3rd Birthday continues the story of Aya Brea. The latest entry in the series will be released as a PlayStation Portable title as well as a digital download on the PlayStation Store.

Releasing the first two games on the PlayStation Network is a great way to lead into the release of a new entry in the franchise. Many classics have found their way to the PlayStation Store such as Final Fantasy 7, a classic in another Square Enix series. It’s smart to refresh fan memories before releasing the next chapter in the Parasite Eve story – especially since it has been a decade since the second entry.
