Paladins Begins Free Open Beta on PS4 and Xbox One

Is Paladins A Ripoff of Overwatch? - Paladins: Champions of the Realm Ruckus

Hi-Rez Studio’s fast paced, colorful shooter Paladins: Champions of the Realm has now entered open beta on consoles, meaning gamers on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can experience the game for free. To celebrate the transition from closed to open beta, Hi-Rez has released a new trailer for Paladins, which can be seen below.

Like the closed beta, the Paladins open beta will give gamers free access to a handful of the game’s characters. The developer will rotate which champions are playable for free users, and will continue to offer the Founder’s Pack, which gives players access to all champions for $19.99.

Since it’s release, Paladins has been the subject of multiple controversies among gamers. First off, many gamers pointed out that the shooter seems to be a clone of Blizzard’s popular game, Overwatch. Hi-Rez Studios COO, Todd Harris, denied those claims and defended the developer’s vision for the game. Despite the defense, many gamers have continued to view Paladins as an Overwatch copycat.

That said, there are also quite a few things Paladins does better than Overwatch, such as PvE modes, mix and match cosmetics, and weekly challenges, to name a few. Those features have given Paladins a leg up against the competition in some ways, and the fact that it's free-to-play should also help the game compete with the popular Blizzard shooter.

However, despite being free, it is important to note that Paladins has been hit with a pay-to-win controversy. A couple months ago, Paladins made some updates to the way players can spend Gold in the game, allowing players to more easily access better weapons and items by spending their own money.

Yet despite the claims of ripping off Overwatch and creating a pay-to-win scenario, Paladins continues to do extremely well on Steam, and seems to have done well during its closed beta on consoles. Now that more gamers will have access to the shooter, it won’t be surprising to see Paladins continue its growth.

It will be interesting to see if Paladins can ever reach the success of Overwatch, or if it will eventually fizzle out like Gearbox Software’s Battleborn.

Paladins: Champions of the Realm is currently available for free on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Founder’s Pack is available on all platforms for $19.99.
