The idea of a team-based multiplayer game is that players are supposed to work as a team. However, that information might be news to some gamers, as many players will find themselves paired with rude teammates who act like anything but. This is as true of Overwatch as any other multiplayer shooter.

One Overwatch fan has an idea for how to get a small amount of payback against players who talk trash and bail on their teammates. They created a mockup of a new user interface for when a player quits, but their team still wins without them.

Reddit user CakasaurusMusic created the mockup and shared it on the Overwatch subreddit. The simple interface consists of a popup informing players of their former team’s victory. “Sometimes,” the example text reads, “we just can’t be there to celebrate wins in person. We thought you should know that against the odds, your team’s courage and determination brought them a well-earned victory at Eichenwalde. Send them a Salute!” Notably, CakasaurusMusic made the Salute non-optional, as it is the only way to close the popup and return to the game’s menu.

While there is nothing openly hostile about the text itself, it comes across as more than a little sarcastic given the context. Still, as one commenter pointed out, the note is neutral enough that it could also work for players who lost their connection or had legitimate reasons to quit. Several commenters, including CakasaurusMusic, agreed, with some Overwatch players noting that they’d like the ability to send a message to teammates after getting kicked from the game.

Alternatively, some fans thought the message wasn’t passive-aggressive enough to penalize toxic Overwatch players. They suggested adding versions of “Also, maybe you were dragging them down” or similar statements. This suggestion was popular with some Overwatch fans on the subreddit, who felt that the game’s server penalties weren’t sufficient. However, a few people also pushed back against this idea, arguing that it might be unnecessarily hostile toward anyone with a legitimate reason for leaving the match.

Other commenters pointed out that if Overwatch sent this message every time a team wins, the rude players in question would also know when their team lost. The commenters argue this would validate the troll’s behavior and perhaps even give them an extra bit of satisfaction. Suggested solutions included always sending the message or creating an alternate version that attempts to guilt trip the misbehaving Overwatch players. However, it’s questionable how effective either of those tactics might be at combating trolls.

Fans may also be putting too much thought into what CakasaurusMusic acknowledges is a petty grievance. Still, rude and caustic players can be frustrating, especially when they turn that abuse on their supposed teammates.

Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
