Following on the heels of its annual Anniversary event and then releasing its latest character Wrecking Ball, Blizzard has been fairly quiet in terms of what's next for Overwatch. The title just wrapped up its first Grand Finals match of Overwatch League, getting to debut the game in primetime on ESPN as well. Riding high off of that momentum, Blizzard is finally teasing the next event for the game, which is going to be a return to the Overwatch Summer Games.

Originally debuting back in 2016 in time for the Summer Olympics, the Overwatch Summer Games event takes the fans out of its traditional hero shooter roots and instead adds a 3v3 soccer match called Lucioball. While the announcement shouldn't surprise anyone considering this will be the third year for the in-game event, it's starting a little later than usual. Players can start kicking the oversized ball around next week on August 9 through the 30th.

While the news will no doubt excite fans of Lucioball, details on what's new a third time around are still non-existent. One constant however is that certain characters will likely get new summer-themed skins. Last year introduced the wildly popular Grillmaster: 76 and Lifeguard McCree skins, two items which remain in high regard with the Overwatch community. It's also expected that the event will pull classic Summer Games items back into the loot boxes as last year even protected players against duplicate items.

The biggest question the community has is how this year will be different from the previous two. Blizzard has made a point to not add new events to the calendar and instead spend time reworking past events to make them feel fresh. The best example of this came earlier this year during the Overwatch Archives event which introduced the PvE mode Retribution. While the first year for the event focused on Tracer's first mission, Retribution centered its story around Gabriel Reyes and his Blackwatch team attempting to extract after their mission went off the rails.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
