With the Overwatch universe’s characters essentially being superheroes, it is hardly a surprise that they have become such a hit with fans. If Blizzard ever wants to go further with embracing the similarities to other superhero properties, it is hard to think of a more exciting option than an Overwatch and Marvel crossover event.

Admittedly, such an event is unlikely. Overwatch has been available for over five years now, and a Marvel crossover has yet to happen, meaning that Blizzard is likely content with doing its own events full of original cosmetics. Still, while a new Overwatch event themed around Marvel comics seems like a pipe dream, it remains fun to think about. Skins like Ironheart Pharah and Thanos Doomfist have obvious potential, while plenty of emotes could spawn from the event, too. If it ever did happen, the artist Hlulani proves that Spider-Gwen and Widowmaker are a perfect match.

With Widowmaker using a grappling hook during her Overwatch animated short in a similar manner to Spider-Man, it would make sense if she ever takes on a Spidey-inspired look. While there are plenty of great female Spiders in the comics, including Silk and Spider-Woman, Spider-Gwen’s stylish costume would make her the most exciting option for an in-game skin. The Overwatch subreddit seems to agree, as Hlulani’s art was posted there by Winged_Daedulus and received plenty of praise.

The special skin sees Widowmaker donning Spider-Gwen’s white and pink costume, with only the mask left behind. In the art, Widowmaker’s face is fully exposed, with her signature goggles worn instead. They take on a white color to match the costume, with pink lights seen on the Infra-Sight gear. Outside of this goggles-related change and Widowmaker’s dark hair, though, everything else remains the same. The pink webbing can be seen inside the hood, while the same pattern is visible on the outfit. Widowmaker is even shooting webs, adding to the quality of the piece.

Aside from both characters having a love for spider-based insignia, they both share a tragic backstory. In the case of Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s original love interest, she does not die in her universe. Instead, she gets superpowers, eventually killing Peter by accident once he transforms into The Lizard. As for Widowmaker, her close relationship with Talon is completely tied to the faction brainwashing her. Forcing her to kill her own husband, Talon also slowed her heart rate to make her the perfect sniper — turning her skin blue in the process.

With the Overwatch community responding well to the fan art, and both characters sharing heartbreaking stories and spider-inspired looks, an official Spider-Gwen skin would be great to see one day. Still, it is unlikely, meaning that Hlulani’s art may be the closest that gamers get to Spider-Widow.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
