While Overwatch itself doesn't have much in the way of cut-scenes or narrative elements, Blizzard has nevertheless given the game and its characters expansive lore through other avenues, like digital shorts and comics. Most recently, Blizzard released a short story called "Bastet," which can be read here, that details the sexuality of one of the game's most popular characters.

Per the Bastet short story, it seems that Soldier: 76 is gay, and at one point was in a romantic relationship with a man named Vincent. Of course, it's possible that Soldier is bisexual or pansexual instead, but as of now, the evidence is pointing to him being chiefly interested in men.

This revelation about Soldier: 76 seems to be overshadowing other aspects of the Bastet story, such as the mission Ana and Soldier are on, and the fact that the story also features a new skin for Ana. However, that's understandable, as Soldier: 76's sexuality hasn't really been touched on in other Overwatch media, and it seems to have caught many fans by surprise.

Of course, Soldier: 76 isn't the only LGBT Overwatch character. In fact, Tracer was famously revealed to have a girlfriend in a Holiday comic a few years ago, and the tank-class character Zarya is said to be bisexual.

Since its inception, Overwatch has made an effort to be one of the most diverse video games there is, and so far it has mostly lived up to that promise, with LGBT characters like Soldier, Tracer, and Zarya being proof of that. After the reveal of the latest hero Ashe as a playable character, though, some have criticized Overwatch for not including any black female playable characters. The lack of black female representation on the Overwatch roster was scrutinized even further when it came to light that both Ashe and Mercy were previously conceptualized as women of color before being given lighter skin tones later in development.

With at least six more playable heroes in development, it's possible Overwatch will address this gap in its roster in future updates. In the meantime, fans can expect Blizzard to continue releasing new content that expands on the backstories of the game's many heroes.

Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
