The Anniversary 2018 update for Overwatch kicks off a brand new event in the consistently popular hero shooter, but that's not all it does. The new update for Overwatch also adds the new Free for All Deathmatch map Petra to the game, and some fans believe it includes hints as to who the next hero will be.

The Petra map in Overwatch features laptops and tablets with messages written by an unseen character named H. Faisal (full name possibly Hamid Faisal). Faisal has apparently been conducting excavations on numerous Overwatch maps, alongside other new characters named Al-Hamdan, Dr. Nachareon, and Iaonnidis. While we have yet to actually see any of these characters physically represented in the game or in animated shorts, that hasn't stopped fans from speculating that one of them may be the next hero.

The data logs these characters have left lying around the Petra map may point to the new hero being someone else entirely, however. The logs make mention of statues of Greek gods that can be found on other Overwatch maps, leading some to believe that the next hero, whoever they are, will be Greek.

The data logs also mention a "hidden chamber" somewhere on the Petra map. If such a chamber is accessible by fans, no one has managed to find it yet. However, it's possible that the next Overwatch character is actually hidden away in this chamber, and some changes to the Petra map will signal its discovery and the new character's debut.

If so, it wouldn't be the first time Blizzard changed an Overwatch map to mark the arrival of a new character. In the months leading to Doomfist's addition to the roster, Blizzard changed the Numbani map to show the havoc wreaked by the character when he attacked the city to steal his gauntlet from the payload.

While it wouldn't be out of character for Blizzard to tease Overwatch's next hero in the new Petra map, it's possible that these data logs are just meant to give the new map some extra flavor. Ultimately, fans will have to wait for Blizzard to share more information to be sure of the identity of the game's next playable hero.

Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
