Overwatch fans are buzzing about the new tank hero Sigma, but they should know that he is far from the last hero that will be added to the game. In fact, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan recently revealed at least one of the new characters that's still in the works, and confirmed that there's at least two more characters in active development.

It was revealed by Kaplan that Mauga will one day be a playable hero in Overwatch. Mauga, for the uninitiated, is a character that was first introduced in Baptiste's short story, and was rumored to be Hero 31 before Hero 31 was confirmed to be Sigma. As it turns out, Mauga was originally going to have Sigma's abilities, but the backstory they came up with no longer suited him, and so Mauga's planned abilities were given to Sigma instead.

It's unclear if Mauga will still be a tank character when he is eventually added to Overwatch because it was also revealed that a new damage hero and a new healer are also in the works for the game. It's possible that Mauga's design will be shifted to being a completely different kind of character instead, but we'll have to wait to find out more information on that front.

What's interesting about Overwatch having at least two, maybe three, new characters in development is that Overwatch 2 has already leaked for a likely Blizzcon 2019 announcement. The leak comes from Jason Schreier of Kotaku, and so it's not exactly just a made-up Internet rumor. And since we know Overwatch has more characters in development, it may actually back up Schreier's report on the game.

According to Schreier's sources, Overwatch 2 will focus on PvE, and has even been compared to Left 4 Dead. This could be an indication that Blizzard will keep the original Overwatch as the PvP representation for the franchise and will continue to develop content for it, while using Overwatch 2 to appeal to a different demographic.

More on Overwatch's future should come to light at Blizzcon 2019 in November. In the meantime, fans can look forward to mastering the new tank hero Sigma, who is currently playable in the PTR.

Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
