Overwatch is a game populated by a cast of colorful and interesting characters, all with unique backstories and a wide range of special abilities at their disposal. However, some Overwatch characters are more popular than others, with some that are beloved by the community and others that are loathed. Now some professional Overwatch players completing in the Overwatch League have sounded off on the matter, revealing which character they like the least.

A number of professional Overwatch players interviewed by IGN on the first night of the Overwatch League said support character Mercy was the character they would remove from the game if given the chance. As explained by Silkthread from the Los Angeles Valiant team, "So if I could go back in time and secretly remove a hero, it would be Mercy because I think Resurrection in a first-person shooter game like Overwatch, it's not fun to spectate. It's not fun to play with. It's not fun to play against, especially."

Silkthread's view that Mercy is "not fun" was echoed by other professional Overwatch players, including Avast from the Boston Uprising team and Super from San Francisco Shock. These players and others also agreed that Mercy's main issue is her Resurrection ability is problematic for the balance of the game.

For what it's worth, Blizzard seems to agree with this sentiment. Mercy has undergone a number of radical changes since Overwatch launched in 2016, with the most recent change nerfing her Ultimate ability. If complaints about Mercy and her impact on the game persist, however, Blizzard may have to go back to the drawing board and completely redesign her abilities.

If Blizzard finds Mercy impossible to balance properly, the company may consider removing her from the game entirely. Game director Jeff Kaplan has said in the past that he "left the door open" for the possibility of outright retiring heroes from Overwatch, though that seems highly unlikely.

After all, there are certainly Mercy mains out there, and people that may have spent real-world money trying to unlock some of her special skins. If Blizzard were to retire a hero like Mercy, it would need to think of some way to compensate players that have invested time and money into the character.

While professional Overwatch players may want Mercy removed from the game, it seems like the healer character is here to stay. However, Blizzard will continue to tweak Mercy's abilities in an effort to make her more balanced, so expect more changes for her in the future.

Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
