Modding a game like Blizzard Entertainment's team-based shooter Overwatch can lead to some interesting results, such as giving Widowmaker creepy spider legs that let her climb up walls. However, some ideas completely change the scope of what players might believe is possible in Overwatch, such as Bonkorn's "OWWare" mod that turns the shooter into a WarioWare-style mini-game collection.

Inspired by a custom SourceMod game mode in Team Fortress 2 called "TF2Ware," Bonkorn's mod adds 48 simple five-second objectives for players to complete in a custom arena like what fans of titles such as Game & Wario would expect: Moving to specific locations, dodging certain attacks, using emotes, and so on. There are also 12 boss stages that take place after every five microgames to award extra points, and after two complete matches one of seven "special modes" activate to add an overarching challenge such as increasing everyone's movement speed.

While many of these ideas are drawn directly from TF2Ware according to the listing posted for the mod on the Overwatch Workshop Codes website, others come from community suggestions or are simply references to games like Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog. The mod was last updated Friday and is "currently in development" according to Bonkorn, so fans can expect additional mini-games and bug fixes going forward.

The Overwatch Workshop is full of interesting experiments for players to mess around with beyond adding entirely new game modes such as OWWare. One creation allows players to combine all six Overwatch heroes on a team into one character, which has some chaotic results as one might expect.

This more complete modding freedom for fans comes at what is arguably the tail-end of Overwatch's life. Blizzard recently released the game's final new playable hero, Echo, and a bevy of special skins for characters like Mercy to celebrate the game's fourth anniversary in an event that ends June 9. Overwatch 2 is also confirmed to be in development.

In the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, BlizzCon 2020 was canceled last month, effectively confirming that fans of the company's many properties such as Overwatch will have to wait for a new presumably online-only event to find out more about upcoming titles. Luckily there are some really creative mods to mess around with in the meantime, and no doubt Bonkorn's OWWare could be a good time sink with some friends.

Overwatch is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
