While many Overwatch fans are waiting with bated breath for the sequel’s BlizzCon showing, others have been showing off their creativity. One Overwatch fan named Zibartas has been hard at work finishing his gender-bent Mercy cosplay, sharing the final design on his Twitter.
The Danish-based costume-maker shared his functional Mercy Wings back in August, with the wings made of pure steel and aluminum. Making a surprisingly terrifying sound when activated, the wings look amazing, fully enhanced by ultra-bright LED lights. Glowing bright just like Mercy’s wings do in-game, fans were amazed by Zibartas’ work on the design, and it is hard not to find the activation of the wings just as satisfying months later.
However, Zibartas has returned with a follow-up video, this time showing that he has made more Overwatch replicas based on Mercy’s kit. The cosplayer can be seen wielding Mercy’s Caduceus Staff, with the healing and damage boosting item spinning on its own just like it does in game. Made of metal and having proper handles on the staff’s body where the item can be held, the staff looks to be just as high quality as Zibartas’ wings. A functional Halo is also resting above the cosplayer’s head, once again shining bright due to the LEDs used.
The detailed Overwatch cosplay shared by Zibartas took a lot of work to pull off, as he shares that he was working on the look for over a year. The effort put into the design certainly seems to have been worthwhile, though, with multiple commenters praising the cosplayer on the outfit. With leg armor, a bulky neck pad, and loose gloves, this specific Mercy outfit looks fitting of a male battle angel — with the cosplayer revealing this is completely intentional in a follow-up post.
Much like the recently teased Overwatch hero Brit was reimagined as the beloved gamer and mech pilot D.Va, Mercy was originally a male character. A full-on fighter as opposed to a renowned scientist, the concept art for the pre-Angela Ziegler Mercy has been shared in the past. Zibartas captured this concept with his design, even bringing back the red, black, and white color scheme seen in the male Mercy’s early art. With the leather outfit being just as well-made as the halo, staff, and wings, many commenters have highlighted how the cosplay is easily one of the most impressive shared for Mercy thus far.
While a male Mercy will likely never be seen in Overwatch itself, this cosplayer has succeeded at bringing the design to life outside the game. With Overwatch 2 news looming closer, Zibartas will surely have more opportunities for great cosplay soon.
