The annual Winter Wonderland event is back on in Overwatch, bringing a holiday flair to the hero shooter, and Blizzard is getting in on the spirit of the season by giving players a special gift just for logging in before the event wraps up on January 2nd.

Fans who log into Overwatch between now and the event's end will receive five Winter Loot Boxes, giving everyone a chance at grabbing one of the holiday themed skins for their favorite heroes. Classic offerings like Junkrat's Krampus skin and Lucio's Snow Fox look are back alongside new selections like an ugly sweater outfit for Soldier: 76 and the Rime skin for Sigma, Overwatch's newest tank-class character.

The Winter Wonderland event also features two returning special game modes, Mei's Snowball Offensive and Yeti Hunter, which both bring their own frigid spin on Overwatch's distinctive multiplayer action, and the new Snowball Deathmatch mode. Earning 9 wins in any of the Quick Play, Arcade or Competitive playlists this week will score fans the Snow Angel skin for Mercy.

Fans of the hero shooter got the chance to watch game director Jeff Kaplan relax by the fireside earlier this week during Blizzard's annual Overwatch Yule Log stream, in one of the developer's sillier traditions. Kaplan kept silent for most of the stream, but cryptically hinted at the possibility of the Junker Queen arriving as a new hero. The game itself also recently received a patch overhauling the pre-match experience, replacing the Skirmish system with a new feature called While You Wait.

Blizzard unveiled a sequel to the popular shooter, Overwatch 2, earlier this year at BlizzCon, but the first entry in the series still has life in it yet. Rather than adopting a traditional approach and dropping support for the older iteration, Blizzard instead plans to keep the original updated alongside its successor, with all new heroes and maps included in both titles and keeping players' cosmetic collection and stats consistent across the board. A release date for Overwatch 2 has yet to emerge, but fans can likely expect more news on when it will arrive in the new year.

Overwatch is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
