Activision Blizzard may have taken quite a hit following its recent decision to lay off up to 800 employees despite boasting a record financial year, but that clearly hasn't slowed it down. The company is already prepping for a new bunch of updates for Destiny and is now potentially teasing a brand new character for Overwatch, in the form of a piece of lore and a very brief teaser video.

A new post was recently published on the multiplayer shooter's official blog that takes the form of a letter about a missing Talon strike team (Talon being the terrorist organization that most of Overwatch's villain characters like Reaper and Widowmaker belong to) that was sent to Tortuga to recover a deserter named Jean-Baptiste Augustin.

The letter can be read in full here but it's probably safe to say that this mysterious Jean-Baptiste could be a new playable character in the future, which would bring the total roster to a nice, round 30.

The letter makes a point of highlighting his status as a medic so we already have a solid hint at the character's class but it also mentions how good of a shot he is and his adaptability skills, having apparently managed to singlehandedly kill groups of highly-trained Talon agents. Maybe this suggests a healer with a notable emphasis on combat as well? He also has a French name, which would perfectly tie in with the most recent map set in Paris.

However, it should be stressed that this is purely speculation at this point. It's entirely possible that this is a fake-out and that Jean-Baptiste won't be the next character. Let's not forget that Doomfist was hinted at and teased for ages before he was made playable. Maybe the next new character is actually the letter's writer, Captain Cuerva? It wouldn't be the first time Activision Blizzard blindsided its fans, like when they revealed a hamster would be the newest character.

Overwatch is available right now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
