With Season 8 of Overwatch now in full swing, it's safe to say that there will be plenty of gamers who make the team-based shooter a priority to play in 2018 just so they can hone their skills while competing in placement matches. Beyond the inclusion of Competitive Season 8, though, Blizzard intends to continue expanding upon the title's ever-growing roster of characters, with the publisher and developer now revealing that the 27th Hero is being internally tested at the company.

As seen below in the latest Overwatch developer diary, the video primarily celebrates Blizzard's accomplishments with the game during 2017, as the studio added three new heroes, new levels, and even a Deathmatch mode. More importantly, though, director Jeff Kaplan then not only goes on to announce that Hero 27 is being internally tested, but also confirms that there are more characters currently in development to follow the 27th Hero.

Of course, there's no telling who–or what–will wind up becoming the 27th Hero in Overwatch, but one should expect fan speculation to begin ramping up soon enough, as the community tends to go full detective mode when a new character is announced. For example, prior to the offense character Doomfist's inclusion in the game, fans picked apart practically every asset released by Blizzard looking for proof of his existence until he was finally confirmed.

All things considered, it's great to see that Blizzard is still committed to adding even more Heroes to Overwatch so far after its launch back in 2016, especially when the company didn't initially promise any more would come beyond the first batch of DLC. With this being the case, it will be interesting to eventually find out the identity of Hero 27, and experience the "ton of new content" for 2018.

Overwatch is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
