There are a lot of heroes to play as in Overwatch. While some are better used by more experienced players, there are also ones that would be great for a newcomer to the team-based shooter to control, as well as for people that have been playing the game for a while but aren't ranked highly.

In Overwatch's Hero Gallery, each character is ranked between one and three stars, letting fans know how difficult each one is to use. These are the heroes that were ranked with either one star or with two but are still really easy and fun to control.

Updated on September 26, 2021, by Anastasia Maillot: Overwatch might be in a bit of a slump as the fan base waits eagerly to hear more news about Overwatch 2. However, with news of the next game on the horizon, newcomers might be curious to try out this unique shooter with abilities.

The hero pool hasn't changed much in recent years, but with balance changes coming in more regularly, heroes and metas are constantly changing. However, mechanically non-demanding heroes still remain largely the same, with a few extra additions to the list.

15 Winston

Overwatch Winston Banana

Winston is a tank with the ability to jump and dive into the back of the enemy team and claim space. He's great at harassing squishy backline supports, provided he receives the full support of his team. As such, he's not mechanically difficult to master, but simply more dependent on his team.

Winston's tesla cannon ensures that players won't have to worry about having great mechanical aim. Moreover, his ultimate, Primal Rage, is excellent at displacing people. The only mechanical challenge is knowing how to use his ultimate to juggle a squishy character into a corner or off the map.

14 Mei

overwatch mei shocked animated short

For a powerful DPS with great utility, Mei is a nice option. She works well in maps where tight chokepoints force enemies to play safer. Mei can isolate teams that play together with her wall, allowing for her team to get easy picks.

Her ice block gives her additional sustain, which makes Mei a more forgiving character to play. However, when faced off against aerial damage like Pharah, she loses some of her power, so running her all the time isn't possible.

13 Orisa

overwatch orisa summer games

Orisa isn't the easiest character in the game, but her role is very simple to understand. As a slow tank with tons of sustain and great shield life, she can hold positions for team compositions that are more bunker-style, or even double shield. Her sustain makes her a forgiving character to play, as players won't need to worry about being out of position.

Her Halt ability is the best part about her. She can pull enemies out of position or from behind shields, while her teammates focus fire her pulls. Finally, her Supercharger gives an immense damage boost to her entire team, allowing her teammates to farm their ultimate abilities quickly. Neither of these requires too much mechanical skill to pull off, though Halt does need a bit of practice to master.

12 Symmetra

overwatch symmetra summer games 2021

Symmetra is perfect for players who love to play mind games and make chokepoints difficult to cross for the enemy. Her turrets deal additional damage, which alleviates some of the pressure on her shoulders to do that damage. Her beam requires good tracking in order to achieve its fully charged form, however.

Symmetra's teleporter is great for setting up turret bombs in the enemy backline or to move an entire team through difficult chokepoints. Finally, her ultimate is just a big shield that, when placed correctly, can make a team fight very painful for the enemy to clean up quickly. Overall, she's not too hard to master.

11 Moira

Overwatch-Moira-Harmony-and-Discord

For players who want to play support, do a bit of damage, but also heal their team without requiring a ton of mechanical skill, Moira is the way to go. Her damage and healing orbs are easy ways to do both of her jobs: supporting and damaging. The only "hard" part of her kit is using just enough of her healing juice to avoid depleting her resource meter.

Moira's ultimate Coalescence is a great ultimate to push with and requires basic tracking skills. It can both damage and heal at the same time, so it favors compositions that are clumped up. Moira also regenerates health when dealing damage, and her Fade ability makes her mobile and self-sustaining against flanking DPS players.

10 Lucio

overwatch lucio player controls hero using motion control and air cannon Rudeism twitch

Lucio is one of the most fun support heroes to play in the game. He can switch between making himself, as well as teammates that are close to him, heal or move faster. He can also walk on walls, making it more difficult for enemies to shoot him down, especially when he's running around as quickly as possible.

His Soundwave ability lets him knock opponents back, which many use to take them off of the map. Sound Barrier is his ultimate ability and it can give comrades that are close to him shields so they can live longer. It's best to use it when in danger so that the team has a better chance of living.

9 Junkrat

overwatch halloween event 2019 skins

Instead of having a normal gun, Junkrat users play with his Frag Launcher, which is great for players that don't have good aim. He can also attack them with a Concussion Mine and a Steel Trap, which can possibly kill a hero when used together. With Junkrat's ultimate ability, Rip-Tire, players will control a tire that can cause a lot of damage to enemies.

It's best to use this ultimate when opponents are near each other, as long as those controlling Junkrat are hiding since they won't know when another enemy could sneak up and defeat them. When Junkrat dies, he drops bombs that can hurt enemies, sometimes getting revenge without having to touch a button.

8 Roadhog

overwatch-roadhog-bajie-skin

Roadhog is a tank that is best used when enemies are close to him. To help with that, players can use the Chain Hook, which captures enemies and brings them up to Roadhog, who can often kill them in one hit. If Roadhog is about to die, use his Take A Breather ability, which can give him a lot of health in a very short period of time.

The only thing that's hard to learn about Roadhog is his ultimate ability, Whole Hog because it isn't the easiest to control. However, after getting used to it, players shouldn't have any difficulty controlling this tank.

7 Pharah

overwatch-pharah-halloween-skin

Pharah is a damage hero that can fly, making it very easy to defeat enemies, especially if they don't see her coming and are focused on attacking other heroes. She can either use her Rocket Launcher to hurt them or her Concussive Blast to knock them back and possibly take them off the map.

Her ultimate ability, Barrage, sends a group of rockets to her opponents at once. It should be noted that Pharah is incredibly weak when up against a hitscan like McCree, Bastion, Widowmaker, or Ashe.

6 Soldier 76

Soldier 76

Speaking of hitscan heroes, Soldier 76 is one of the easiest to play as and many gamers that play shooters will be very familiar with his abilities. He uses an assault rifle, known as the Heavy Pulse Rifle, and can run faster than most heroes, which are often pretty slow.

He can also heal himself and his teammates with his Biotic Field ability. A lot of gamers hate aimbots, which is funny since they become one when using his ultimate ability, Tactical Visor, allowing them to shoot at enemies without needing to aim at them.

5 Brigitte

overwatch brigitte warhammer 40k skin

Brigitte is a support hero that attacks at a close distance with her Rocket Flail. Like a tank, she also has an ability called Barrier Shield, which can protect herself and smaller teammates from getting damaged.

However, unlike the tanks that use shields, Brigitte's can be used as a weapon but falls apart much faster. She can heal teammates from far away with her Repair Pack or those that are near her with her ultimate ability, Rally.

4 Reinhardt

overwatch young reinhardt shatter

Reinhardt works with Brigitte a lot and taught her nearly everything she knows in the story of Overwatch. Like his squire, he uses his Rocket Hammer, a short-ranged weapon, to fight, and has a Barrier Field, which is essentially a much more useful version of Brigitte's Barrier Shield.

Reinhardt can also charge into opponents and attack them with his Fire Strike. His ability, Earthshatter, knocks the enemies in front of him down for a couple of seconds, leaving them vulnerable.

3 Reaper

Overwatch Gabriel Reyes

One more hero that's very easy to use and attacks at a close distance is Reaper. When right next to his opponents, he can kill them with just a few bullets. Not even the tanks, which have the most health out of all of the heroes in the game, have an advantage over him, as he can easily annihilate heroes like Reinhardt and Roadhog.

When being attacked, players can enter Wraith Form, making Reaper ghost-like as nothing can damage him in this ability that lasts for a few seconds. He can also use Shadow Step to get behind opponents and fight all of them at once with his ultimate, Death Blossom.

2 Mercy

overwatch-2-mercy-front-view

Mercy is the easiest support to play as but is very helpful in battle. She can heal teammates and make them stronger with her Caduceus Staff. She can quickly get around to different teammates with her Guardian Angel ability and even pocket them, making sure that they are as protected as possible.

When a comrade dies, she can use her Resurrect ability to bring them back to life. Because of all of these abilities, Mercy is one of the best heroes to have on a team in order to ensure victory.

1 Bastion

overwatch bastion sentry turret

Bastion is the easiest hero to play since it is a walking machine gun. It can switch its Configuration between Sentry and Recon, letting players decide whether they want to be able to move around or be more powerful.

It can also turn into a tank with its ultimate ability, making players feel more like they are controlling a weapon than they are a character. And if that wasn't enough, it can even heal itself. Because of how powerful it is, many support and tank players will try their best to keep Bastion users alive, making it even easier to control.

Overwatch was released on May 3, 2021, and is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
