It hasn’t even been a month since Blizzard released the newest Overwatch map, Junkertown. And yet players are already desperate to play in another new location, with one fan even going as far as to design the map himself, complete with its very own teaser trailer.
‘Cairo’ is a design for a new Overwatch map created by an artist named Joshua Llorente. Put together using 3DS Max, Unreal Engine 4, Substance Painter and Photoshop, the Egyptian-set map looks like the perfect playground for Overwatch players to battle in.
Llorente’s map design includes multiple references to the Egyptian god of the afterlife, Anubis, and if players look through the overgrown vegetation, they will spot an obelisk in the distance. The entire map is filled with beautifully recreated iconography from ancient Egyptian culture and even the payload is a flash gold color, fitting perfectly with the map’s theme.
Overwatch already has several maps that are set in the African country, including Necropolis and Temple of Anubis, which Llorente’s creation seems to borrow from. But the fact that this is an escort map rather than an arena or assault map has many fans of the hugely popular multiplayer game begging Blizzard to make Llorente’s design a reality in-game.
At the very least, they say, Blizzard should bring Llorente on board as the artist clearly has some good ideas. Llorente also designed a Favela Overwatch map and that too was met with calls from fans for Blizzard to give the talented artist a job.
At this point, it’s unclear whether Llorente’s work is on Blizzard’s radar. As Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan recently responded to a fan’s design of a Thai character, it stands to reason that these map designs could get a response too. But there is no guarantee that Blizzard will do anything about it or comment even if it has seen the designs (and fans’ enthusiasm for them).
In fact, Blizzard may well be preparing to reveal a new Overwatch map of its own. The company recently detailed its schedule for BlizzCon 2017, confirming that there will be Overwatch announcements during the event, alongside major updates for several of its other games too. While many players have their hearts set on a new character reveal, the developer is constantly working on all sorts of new content and so a new map may be on the cards too. Fingers crossed and watch this space.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
