There's little better than fans of a video game coming together to solve a mystery or piece together how an upcoming character will function in a video game. Now, fans of Overwatch have done exactly that, believing that they've determined a key ability of Echo, one of the future heroes planned for Overwatch 2.

Fans discovered a forum post dating back to March 2019 by Geoff Goodman, one of Overwatch's developers. In the post, Goodman details some abilities that the team had played around with but never actually got implemented into the game, for a variety of reasons. These prototypes are still sitting around for the right hero, which may just mean Echo. After all, one ability is a near-perfect match for what fans have seen of the character.

The ability in question is known as the Bomblet Gun, a weapon that deals low damage, but fires projectiles that stick to enemies. These projectiles can then be detonated as the alt-fire mode. The team played around with the weapon for a while, and Goodman claims that it was particularly fun with Tracer, but it wound up being scrapped as it just didn't quite fit. However, eagle-eyed fans noticed that it appears Echo uses this weapon, or at least one similar to it, in the "Zero Hour" cinematic for Overwatch 2 right around the 5:17 mark.

Echo's weaponry appears to match Goodman's description of the Bomblet Gun pretty closely, which is a pretty good indicator that the character will use the weapon. There's still no release date for Echo, or even a solid release window, but at least fans can get a general sense of what the character may play like. Other characters have been confirmed for the game as well, including the upcoming Sojourn.

Imaging the future of Overwatch is exciting. Blizzard had an incredibly rough 2019, but the company seems to have a much clearer vision of the future ever since Blizzcon. If the Bombet Gun does turn out to be one of Echo's abilities, it should make the character a fair bit more unique than some of the others out there. There may be four other unannounced  Overwatch 2 heroes too, so it's safe to say there will be plenty of Overwatch content down the line.

Overwatch is currently available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
