Following balance changes to Widowmaker and McCree, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan reveals that the team are currently “exploring some options” for Zenyatta.

Now that Blizzard has started rolling out Overwatch‘s competitive play mode, it will be very interesting to see how each of the game’s 21 available heroes will fare in ranked matches as opposed to quick play matches. Since console players will have to wait a few more weeks before they get the mode, PC ranked play players will be the first to get the chance to test out Blizzard’s recently introduced balance changes to McCree and Widowmaker. Should these new changes mesh well with the game, this could lead to balance changes to another Overwatch character according to a new statement from game director Jeff Kaplan.

Over at the Blizzard Forums, a recent thread was started about what plans Blizzard may have in store for the hero Zenyatta. Kaplan replied that there have indeed been discussions about the character, and the development team are currently looking into balancing options. However, the team wants to see how the new McCree and Widowmaker balance changes play out before making any changes to Zenyatta. As for what those ‘options’ for balancing Zenyatta are, Kaplan didn’t reveal any specific details.

“We’ve been talking about him. We wanted to see how the Widowmaker and McCree balance changes played out before making any changes. We’re exploring some options right now. Nothing more to report at this time.”

For a number of players, this announcement about possible Zenyatta balance changes will undoubtedly be good news. The orb-wielding hero’s healing and debuff abilities were initially nerfed following feedback from the Overwatch beta, and now the main complaints appear to revolve around Zenyatta’s lack of health.

The main issue is that following the character’s initial nerf, Zenyatta can’t hide behind cover if players want to use him properly, but the lack of health means that moving out of cover is a surefire way to get eliminated. Presumably one of the balance “options” that Blizzard are looking into revolve around increasing Zenyatta’s health.

McCree, Widowmaker, and Zenyatta aren’t the only Overwatch heroes that Blizzard are looking into, as the developer recently announced that Torbjörn’s turrets will be nerfed for consoles. Balance changes for a game such as Overwatch are inevitable, and there’s no doubt that Blizzard are working hard at getting everything in the game just right.

It is clear the Blizzard is dedicated in supporting Overwatch well beyond its immediate release, and it remains to be seen whether the developer does indeed implement some balance changes for Zenyatta. Hopefully these constant updates and continued lines of communication from Blizzard will continue, and we’ll be able to keep you posted on any  Overwatch related news and announcements.

Overwatch is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
