Blizzard is currently in working on Overwatch 2 and part of that process is recognizing issues with the original game that need to be changed. To that effect, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan is spending a lot of time in the Blizzard forums logging feedback and responding to concerns. One topic he's brought up is the state of Overwatch's capture point maps, specifically the maps with just two capture points. Kaplan acknowledges that these maps have issues, but doesn't reveal any specific plans.

Kaplan and the Blizzard team say that there's an inherent issue with this mode specifically, the 2-capture point mode. From there, Kaplan insinuates that it's an issue of balancing the mode for different contexts, such as professional play, competitive play, or casual play. In that vein, Kaplan says that "not everyone dislikes the modes or the maps," insinuating that Blizzard is happy with the balance its created even if it's just for a majority of players and not all players.

Nevertheless, Blizzard and Kaplan continue to discuss the 2-capture point mode and its maps constantly. "We discuss 2cp all the time, it's one of the top discussions we have in the design group," Kaplan describes. He notes that the Overwatch team has "spent more time trying to address that game mode and trying changes than any other mode," and that its maps have been reworked the most of all, too.

For the time being, Kaplan says that Blizzard will "continue to try solutions" and that the issue is "definitely something that's top of mind for us." He just warns Overwatch players that it's not an easy problem, that they've likely considered most options, and that there aren't any "silver bullet solutions."

It does sound a lot like Kaplan is frustrated by the issue, whether it be due to the conversation in the community not being constructive or Blizzard's own frustrations with finding a solution. Needless to say, the 2-capture point assault mode either won't be coming back in Overwatch 2 or will be getting a massive overhaul.

Both the Horizon Lunar Colony and Paris maps were removed from the Overwatch League due to player frustrations in late 2019. The removals were celebrated in the competitive scene, a good example of 2-capture point maps that didn't necessarily work in competitive play but that are more popular with casual players.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
