Symmetra has long been a controversial addition to Overwatch from when she first appeared in the game at launch. Starting out as a Support character, her primary utility came in building a powerful defense by placing six of her turrets which dealt damage while significantly slowing enemy movement. Her ultimate also allowed her to place a teleport anywhere on the map linking back to the spawn room, allowing for a swift return to the fight. She quickly became less effective as players learned more about how to counter her, however, and her first rework came just six months after Overwatch was released.

Many Support mains felt unhappy over how Symmetra was utilized, as she originally offered no healing or shield-generating abilities. Over the course of a year, Symmetra saw many reworks that eventually moved her from a Support to a Damage hero, and while she thrived during the double shield meta of 2019, she has been somewhat left behind since the universal shield nerf. Though Symmetra is now a much more balanced character in the right hands, she is made redundant like many heroes by new additions with much more versatile offensive kits. Blizzard is now discussing how things can change in Overwatch 2.

In an AMA on r/Games subreddit, Senior Hero Designer Joshua Noh teased some retweaks of Symmetra’s abilities in the upcoming game. In response to a question about the “meaty changes” coming to the character, Noh responded that she isn’t receiving a “rework” as such, but instead, Blizzard is working to “help improve her mobility… to react to the faster pace of [Overwatch 2's] 5v5.” Explaining that they can’t reveal all the details, they tease “a shorter teleporter build time and faster secondary fire projectile speed.”

Since the beta, players have learned just how much Overwatch has changed. With the loss of one tank and the huge reduction of shields in the game, 5v5 has created a greater focus on brawling rather than coordinated team wipes. A ten percent increase in DPS hero movement speed also creates a much quicker game, allowing players to traverse maps a lot faster. As such, Symmetra’s speed changes are a welcome addition, hopefully giving her greater mobility in team fights.

Though Symmetra has long been out of popular play, these small changes (along with some stunning new Mythic outfits) may help in finally getting her the respect she deserves. Nevertheless, one look at the comments shows an outpouring of players begging the developer to return her to the Support role.

Overwatch 2 is currently in development.
