As Blizzard continues to work on hero balance changes, the Overwatch 2 community has been bringing up more concerns that it has with the free-to-play game. Alongside continued complaints about progression and cosmetic prices, players have taken issue with the Seasonal map rotation. While seeing different weather and times of day for the game’s maps is nice, many do not approve of the decision to remove maps at all, especially when two classic play spaces have yet to return.

Though map rotation has some defenders, who will often say that a smaller map pool helps new players learn the game’s arenas, most dislike the feature. With many feeling that Overwatch 2 does not provide enough new content, removing existing content is understandably controversial. Some players want map rotations to happen every few weeks, and others want it to be gone entirely, but it seems unlikely that the latter will happen. Regardless, even if map rotation is here to stay, Numbani and Havana should make a comeback soon.

Havana and Numbani Returning in Season 2 Would Make Sense

overwatch novel leak

Overwatch 2 Season 2 seems to have established a pattern, as while some maps were taken out, two maps were brought back. Going forward, it seems likely that this will become the norm, with two removed maps making a comeback when each Season begins. Instead of something like Watchpoint Gibraltar being brought back, which players got to experience frequently in Season 1, adding in Numbani and Havana makes more sense since they have not been playable in the sequel at all yet.

Numbani is an important location in Overwatch 2’s lore, as heroes like Orisa and Doomfist have their roots in the city. The futuristic African town is essentially the Overwatch universe’s take on Marvel’s Wakanda, and it sees players battling around some stunning futuristic buildings and fighting on large city streets. Players can move through an airport, some shops, and a few other buildings, with Numbani being one of the more popular Hybrid maps due to its standout visuals.

Unlike Numbani, which was present in Overwatch 1 at launch, the Escort map Havana was not added until 2019. Fortunately, with Havana being crafted three years into the first game’s life cycle, Blizzard had all the experience required to craft a terrific map. With players battling through a distillery and a fort, there is some great environmental variety and verticality that ensures every hero can thrive. Further, Havana’s Cuban setting guarantees a colorful arena to fight through, with vibrant red, yellow, and blue buildings seen as opposed to more standard colors.

Though there is a chance that Blizzard holds onto Havana until the Archives event returns, as the map is used for the Storm Rising mission, it makes more sense to bring it back sooner rather than later. By the time Season 3 rolls around, players will have gone 18 weeks without playing on Havana or Numbani. If either map is a player’s personal favorite, waiting four and a half months to see it again will surely be frustrating enough. As such, making the community wait any longer than that would be a major mistake.

With many gamers missing Overwatch 2’s Assault mode and the maps associated with it, like Hanamura and Volskaya Industries, it is tough to see the benefits of map rotation. Blizzard has already removed one mode due to balancing issues, permanently confining several maps to the Arcade. While Push is a solid replacement for Assault, losing additional maps on top of 2CP’s removal has disappointed many players. With the map pool automatically shrunk down in Overwatch 2 due to Assault being sunsetted, making it even smaller by taking out maps with each Season is an odd choice. Hopefully, Blizzard will hear the complaints and move away from rotations that last two months, but no matter what, Havana and Numbani should return in Season 3.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
