There once was a time when industry insiders seemed to think that Overwatch 2 would launch in early 2021. Whether or not that was ever the plan is up for debate, but the fact remains that Overwatch 2 is still not out. Unfortunately, there's no Overwatch 2 release date in sight at the time of this writing, and it remains to be seen when exactly the highly-anticipated hero-shooter will hit store shelves, but a new report may narrow things down a bit.
Dexerto has published a new report claiming that Blizzard is looking to release Overwatch 2 before summer 2022. Another source cited by Dexerto has said that, more specifically, the hope is for the Overwatch 2 release date to be in Q2 of 2022, which would put it in the April 1 to June 30 range. May 2022 would mark the six year anniversary of the original Overwatch's launch, so it seems as good a time as any to release the new game, though a specific month wasn't mentioned.
One of Dexerto's source is quoted as saying that the Overwatch 2 development team has been instructed to focus on what's already in the game and polish for launch. What exactly this means for the game is hard to say as not a lot has been shown of Overwatch 2 to date. There's still a lot left to reveal, though if this release window is accurate information on the game should start ramping up within the next few months or so.
What we know about Overwatch 2 so far is that it will share one aspect of PvP with its predecessor, but will be making a massive change. Overwatch 2 is dropping to 5 heroes per team, which should drastically change the way players approach the game. To make this feasible, teams will be comprised of 2 Support, 2 DPS, and 2 Tank heroes, with the various Tanks in Overwatch getting significant reworks to fit into this new system.
Overwatch 2's potential Reinhardt changes have already been discussed, but as it stands, it's unclear how the other Tanks will function in this new setup. Since this is one of the most significant changes coming with Overwatch 2, hopefully fans can learn more sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 will also have a campaign mode, but that too has mostly been kept underwraps so far. Assuming Dexerto's sources are correct about the Q2 2022 release window, though, fans should learn more sooner rather than later.
