The Overwatch 2 release date may have been confirmed for 2020 by an official PlayStation tweet. Blizzard Entertainment announced Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon 2019, confirming the game for PC and consoles, but it had not said when fans can expect to play it.

A tweet by the official PlayStation Brazil Twitter account said that "2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 arrives at PS4" and that to get ready for its release, it had spoken to some of the developers of the game. The tweet had a link to a Blizzard Entertainment interview done in Portuguese. Some fans are taking it as confirmation that they'll be able to play the game during the holiday 2020 season.

However, fan translations of the Blizzard Entertainment interview reveal that the developers did not confirm that Overwatch 2 release date while talking to PlayStation and the tweet has also been deleted. This means that the tweet confirming the 2020 release date was likely an accident. The person behind the PlayStation Brazil account, like so many Overwatch fans, is probably just guessing that Overwatch 2 will be released in 2020.

The game may not have officially been confirmed for next year by Blizzard but this hasn't stopped fans from coming up with suggestions of the Overwatch 2 release date. One popular suggestion posted in the Reddit thread about the tweet was that Overwatch 2 will be released just after BlizzCon, which is often held in November. Blizzard has teased some Overwatch 2 characters and releasing the game after BlizzCon would allow it to use the event to officially reveal these characters and why fans will enjoy the game.

Some fans are also saying that the game's release date is holiday 2020 because Blizzard may want to make Overwatch 2 a PS5 and Xbox Series X launch title. Making Overwatch 2 a PS5 and Xbox Series X launch title could be the "best" way to make the game popular. Blizzard has been criticized by some fans who have said that Overwatch 2 looks just like expensive DLC, so making it a launch title could make them change their minds and buy a copy. It could also help to get new fans to play the game.

Officially, Blizzard hasn't said when the game will be released. Overwatch 2 game director has said that the game's release date is a while away yet. It's unclear if a release in 2020 is thought of as a while by Blizzard but fans will be hoping that the developer doesn't wait long to make an announcement.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
