Overwatch 2 has revealed plenty of hero redesigns thus far, ranging from Widowmaker’s more armored getup to Pharah’s transparent visor. With Lucio’s new look even having a smart impact on gameplay, as the musician’s hair changes colors to signify if he is boosting or healing, the new Overwatch 2 looks are a noticeable step in the right direction. Now, two more of these fresh appearances have been revealed.

At Summer Game Fest, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller came out to briefly talk about the game. Outside of a brief discussion on the switch to 5v5, Keller revealed Sombra and Baptiste’s fresh appearances. In the case of Sombra, the change is subtle. For Baptiste, though, his appearance has almost changed completely. Both looks are terrific, though, and they give gamers a good idea of what they can expect from future hero redesigns.

How Overwatch 2’s Versions Of Sombra And Baptiste Are Better

Overwatch 2’s take on Sombra sees the iconic hacker keeping much of her aesthetic, with the hero’s love for the color purple more noticeable than ever before. While Sombra keeps the same hairstyle, it is now entirely purple as opposed to just having some purple accents. The augments on the side of her head are also pink now, making them stand out a bit more. While she rocks a jacket once again, the sleeves are now removed, allowing her to show a bit more skin while putting a greater focus on her gloves and gun. Overall, the design is much like her original look, though the changes made are impactful and create an outfit that is more fitting of Sombra’s personality.

As for the Support hero Baptiste, his design changes are impossible not to spot. Given that the hero has had one of the least memorable designs in the series thus far, though, this appearance change is welcome. Baptiste’s new look sees him completely dropping his orange scarf, doubling down on his new armor. Showing the combat medic symbol alongside a white chest piece that integrates the scarf into the armor, the new look is far more appealing. The teal and white color scheme stands out more without the scarf, too, while Baptiste’s new mohawk steals the show. Fitting into the personality of a confident character that has discovered who he is, the hairstyle is a terrific change. Thanks to this drastic redesign, Baptiste now has a look that is as strong as his story.

What Sombra And Baptiste Tell Us About The Other Overwatch 2 Redesigns

With less than half of Overwatch 2’s new designs revealed, there are still plenty to come. While fans may not know who they will see next, they should have an idea of what to expect from upcoming redesign reveals thanks to Blizzard’s approach thus far. The developer is not changing the characters’ looks just to be different. Instead, it is evolving them in meaningful ways, using the outfits to show character development and the progression of time.

As such, not every hero is going to be getting a drastic redesign in the sequel, and not every hero should. Sombra is a clear example of this, as is her fellow Talon member Reaper. It makes little sense for Reaper to change his look up much, as he is entirely consumed by vengeance. As such, he has only seen a few pieces of armor adds to his appearance, keeping his look intact. For Sombra, her look keeps many of the same bits and pieces, with only some small adjustments to her sleeves and hair. This is all that is needed, though, as Sombra looks better than ever now.

With this in mind, gamers can expect similarly subtle changes for certain heroes. For example, Omnics like Bastion, Zenyatta, and Orisa will likely stay the same, as their designs are not demanding of much change. At the same time, Blizzard is clearly willing to to make massive changes to those that need it. As shown by Baptiste’s new look, huge adjustments can be worthwhile. As such, someone like Soldier 76 could see a big change, dropping part of his mask in favor of a more revealing look. If the hero rejoins Overwatch, this decision makes sense, and Blizzard would likely be willing to make such a change if it fit with the hero’s story. Overwatch 2’s redesigns show that Blizzard is thinking about its characters and their stories, and rather than just trying to make them look cooler, they are giving them big and small changes depending on what they need.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
