Ramattra's introduction to Overwatch 2 will send ripples throughout the game's world. He is the first new playable character since Moira was released that identifies as a true villain. Add this to his role as a transformable tank, and Ramattra might literally be the biggest and baddest hero in Overwatch 2.

But Ramattra may not be as evil as people think he truly is. His origin story video, which made its debut during last weekend's Overwatch League Grand Finals, shows a very different side to the leader of Null Sector - one that is born out of compassion for his Omnic brothers and sisters. And while his methods may seem cruel, they aren't entirely unjustified.

Omnics: From War Robots To Peace Seekers

Created to lead his fellow Omnics in the Omnic Crisis, Ramattra wanted nothing more than a better life for his species. Once the Omnic Crisis ended and the omnium factories that created them were destroyed, Ramattra and his fellow Omnics tried adopting the ways of peace and sought to co-exist with the rest of the world. It was during this time that Ramattra became part of the Shambali - a clandestine order of Omnic monks led by Tekhartha Mondatta. He also became close with the Shambali's leader as well as one of his friends, Tekhartha Zenyatta.

Sadly, peace wouldn't prove fruitful for Ramattra and many of his Omnic brethren. Embittered by the damage caused during the Omnic Crisis, a vast majority of humans still harbored a hatred for Omnics. These humans made life hard for the robot race by forcing hard labor on them and denying them even the most basic rights like citizenship. Some humans would even beat and destroy Omnics in broad daylight just to quell their anger from years past; with other humans refusing to intervene due to cowardice or having the same bitterness within themselves.

Old Pains Never Go Away in Overwatch 2

Ramattra's narration of past events reveals a sad truth about Omnics. Since the omniums were destroyed, Omnics cannot create more of themselves. Their inability to reproduce makes them a single-generation species, and with each new Omnic death, their species inches ever closer to extinction.

Faced with this reality, Ramattra abandoned the ways of peace his brothers Zenyatta and Mondatta followed. Deciding that the best way for Omnics to survive was through force, he created Null Sector - an extremist group dedicated to achieving Omnic rights by any means necessary. While Null Sector's base of operations was centered in the United Kingdom (a country where Omnics were cruelly treated), the group also found footing in other parts of the world where Omnic abuse was prevalent. Null Sector was the group behind the King's Row Uprising that was thwarted by Tracer, Reinhardt, Torbjorn, and Mercy, the attack on Paris that was prevented by the newly-reformed Overwatch, and many other Omnic-related incursions.

Overwatch and Overwatch 2 generally like to paint Null Sector as the bad guys. However, this backstory adds more depth to the group, as though Ramattra and his group may employ extreme methods, this is in retaliation to the humans who continuously deny Omnics their place in the world. But while Null Sector's intentions may be noble, the ways it goes about attaining them only fuel the cycle of neverending hatred. Hopefully, the upcoming Overwatch 2 PvE mode will flesh out these stories by allowing players to see not just a newly reformed Overwatch, but the aftermath of the events of the first game and the Omnic Crisis as well.

Overwatch 2 is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
