Overwatch 2 is set to make some massive changes to Blizzard's popular hero-shooter game, like dropping the number of heroes per team from six to five, and reworking multiple members of the roster. Some of the big Overwatch 2 changes have drummed up some controversy in the community, but others have been embraced. One big Overwatch 2 quality of life change Blizzard is making will see a ping system added to the game.

Blizzard is adding a ping system to Overwatch 2 because it's been a highly-requested feature from the community. The immediate obvious benefit to Overwatch 2's ping system will be that it will allow players to better communicate with their teammates when they either don't have a mic or unwilling to use one.

Of course, the Overwatch 2 ping system can be used in conjunction with voice chat to improve team communication across the board. Overwatch 2 pings will be contextual based on where the player is on the map and what exactly they're trying to ping. If an Overwatch 2 player pings a member of the enemy team, the ping will stay on them and that will be visible to their teammates. Once the line of sight is broken, however, the ping will go away.

Overwatch 2 pings will be useful for more than simply marking enemy players. As explained by Blizzard, players will be able to use the new communication wheel to convey other information to their teammates, like if they need healing or not. If an Overwatch 2 player requests healing, they will essentially ping themselves, in theory making it a lot easier for Support heroes to find and heal them.

While this all sounds helpful on paper, it's easy to see how toxic Overwatch 2 players could abuse the ping system by spamming requests or constantly marking things that don't need to be marked. Blizzard has planned for this and has provided players ways to combat it, like blocking pings from specific players. Between now and launch, fans can expect Blizzard to adjust how the ping system works based on feedback, so it's possible more anti-toxicity measures will be put into place by the time the game is out.

Unfortunately, a solid Overwatch 2 release date is still not available, but some fans will still get to play it sooner rather than later. An Overwatch 2 PvP beta is scheduled to take place at the end of April, so PC players that have signed up will get the chance to try the highly-anticipated game, assuming they get an invite, that is.

Overwatch 2 is in development.
