A few weeks after its release, it's safe to say that Overwatch 2 is already quite a success. Already boasting more players than the first Overwatch ever had, Overwatch 2 seems to be benefiting greatly from its new free-to-play approach, even if some fans still aren't happy with it. But that doesn't mean fans should just sit quietly. Blizzard promised a lot before Overwatch 2 was released, and a lot of content, including the game's biggest selling point, its PvE campaign mode, still isn't in the game.

Announced officially at BlizzCon all the way back in 2019, Overwatch 2 was initially described as a full sequel to the original game, with new maps, new gameplay elements, and, most importantly, a full PvE campaign. This mode was set to be a full campaign that progressed Overwatch's story in a significant way, through co-op missions. On top of the main campaign, Overwatch 2 was also said to have hundreds of additional missions that would be added post-launch that would focus on individual heroes and their own stories. Unfortunately, Overwatch 2's PvE mode has gone through some changes, and it's about for Blizzard to provide fans with an update.

Fans Need an Update on Overwatch 2's PvE Mode

When Overwatch 2 was first announced at BlizzCon in 2019, its PvE game mode was by far the biggest selling point for long-time fans of the series. From the moment the first Overwatch came out, fans have been clamoring for a single-player campaign revolving around the game's heroes. Some of Overwatch's most popular limited-time events have been PvE related, and it only makes sense that a sequel would want to double down on those elements that fans clearly loved in the original title.

In the lead-up to Overwatch 2's eventual release, the game's promised PvE mode played a major role in the pre-release showcases. Blizzard hosted several events for Overwatch 2, most of which teased its PvE campaign quite heavily. New hero abilities were shown off, designed specifically for the game's upcoming PvE mode, and Blizzard confirmed repeatedly that this mode would finally push Overwatch's story forward in a significant way, as opposed to small lore tidbits in comics and item descriptions.

As Overwatch 2 grew closer, less and less information came out about the game's PvE mode. Eventually, in June of this year, Blizzard announced that Overwatch 2 would now adopt a staggered release approach, first releasing its multiplayer as a free-to-play component, with PvE releasing at a later date as a paid DLC expansion. Overwatch 2's multiplayer has been out for a few weeks, but now fans are wondering what happened to the game's highly anticipated PvE mode.

According to Blizzard's Overwatch 2 roadmap which was updated a few weeks ago, the game's PvE mode will begin at some point in 2023. Unfortunately, Overwatch 2's PvE mode isn't going to be quite as fleshed-out on launch as some fans were expecting, with Blizzard recently confirming that it will release episodically over the course of Overwatch 2's lifespan. While this hasn't been confirmed, the most likely scenario is that a new PvE chapter will release every Season, which means that players may need to wait nine weeks between campaign installments. It's also pretty unclear just how big these PvE updates will be. Blizzard needs to provide fans with an update on Overwatch 2's PvE as soon as possible, or it could risk losing a sizable chunk of its loyal player base.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
