Overwatch 2 is a title that is definitely attracting large amounts of attention, but maybe not for all the right reasons. With many fans questioning the need for a sequel to the original title, there is a lot of pressure for the new game to establish its own identity and unique gameplay.

While Overwatch 2 is attempting to do this in a variety of ways, there is one way in particular that is attracting the attention of fans. Overwatch 2 is set to implement a brand-new tier of high-rarity skins for heroes, known as Mythic skins.

Overwatch 2 is an upcoming sequel to the wildly popular original Overwatch, which is set to retain the same online team-based FPS core gameplay of its predecessor. Developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch 2 is set to launch in early access at the end of June, with a full release set for October 4.

In attempting to set itself apart from the first Overwatch, the upcoming sequel has added brand-new heroes. Sojourn is set to be a damage-based hero, the recently announced Junker Queen is a new tank, and a third currently unnamed hero will likely provide a fresh support option for fans of the game.

The PvP of Overwatch 2 is set to be free-to-play, which has proven to be a very popular element of the upcoming game amongst hopeful fans. While also set to boast a plethora of new maps and new co-op PvE story missions, Overwatch 2 seems to have a lot to offer, despite worries that the game would be too similar to the original title. Skins and unlocks from the original carry over to Overwatch 2, but the implementation of brand-new Mythic skins offers a wholly unique aesthetic customization mechanic to the franchise.

Mythic Skins in Overwatch 2

Mythic-tier skins are set to be a big part of Overwatch 2, and will be the rarest skins in the game, being above and perhaps even replacing the previous highest rarity of Legendary from the original game. While many of the finer details regarding Mythic skins are still unknown, fans are still able to get a fair understanding of what they will be like.

Of course, aesthetic skins have been a huge part of the Overwatch franchise identity since its launch in 2016. With a plethora of skins being released for each hero over the years, all at different rarities, it is clear that something bold and drastic needed to be done to build upon the skin hype for Overwatch 2.

It is currently unknown exactly how a player will be able to obtain a Mythic skin, with loot boxes, direct purchases or challenges being the previous franchise norm for unlocking Overwatch skins. What is known, however, is what the main allure of Mythic skins will be. Mythic skins are unique in that they will be highly customizable, offering players a huge range of personalization options to handcraft a truly unique high-quality skin for their favorite hero.

It has been confirmed via the Overwatch Reveal Event that the popular hero Genji will receive his own Mythic skin, with other heroes expected to follow suit in the near future. Within the revealed character art for Genji's Mythic skin, different variations were showcased to his vibrant color-schemes, cosmetic gear, and particle effects. The level to this deep variation seems practically limitless, and will surely be an exciting new facet of Overwatch 2's skin system.

Overwatch 2 launches in early access on October 4 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
