It would probably be an understatement to say that the last couple of weeks have been an exciting time for fans of Overwatch 2. While gamers have had to wait a long time to get an in-depth look at the game, their patience seems to finally be paying off. Recently, the developers at Blizzard held an Overwatch 2: Reveal Event that gave players a much better look at what to expect from the game, including a glimpse at a new character called the Junker Queen.
In addition to the Junker Queen, Blizzard has noted even more heroes will be coming to the game. Specifically, the developer stated that a new character is planned to be added every other season to the free-to-play title. While the details about these heroes coming post-launch are sparse, a developer recently provided a hint about their possible gameplay style.
Not long ago, Geoff Goodman, the Lead Hero Designer on the game, took part in an interview where he discussed the design philosophy regarding potential new heroes for Overwatch 2. While the developer did not reveal a specific new hero coming after launch, he did note that the development team wanted to make more “Mercy-style” Support characters.
According to Goodman, there needed to be viable healers for players to pick from that required skills beyond aiming. He pointed to Mercy as an example and did not buy into the idea that she was a low-skill hero. The developer claimed that a large amount of ability was needed to play the character at a high level. “There is so much skill that goes into positioning yourself well and deciding when to Rez,” Goodman said.
This news from Goodman is likely to stir up debate within the Overwatch fanbase. Support heroes such as Ana, Zenyatta, and even Baptiste have gameplay elements that focus on precision aiming. According to Goodman, the goal of adding more healers similar to Mercy is to allow players to make pivotal plays for their teams in more creative ways that have a lesser emphasis on aiming. “That’s definitely something we talk about a lot, and we’re looking at doing it more in the future,” Goodman said regarding adding more Mercy-style heroes to the sequel.
It will be interesting to see what the future of Overwatch 2 holds. According to the developers, Overwatch 2 is supposed to launch with three new characters. While gamers have already learned a lot about Sojourn and Junker Queen, the third character is still not confirmed. However, it is worth noting that some players thought they had spotted a potential new hero that resembled a blue fox during a trailer at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase. Time will tell if this potential hero could be one of the Mercy-style characters talked about by Goodman.
Overwatch 2 is scheduled to release on October 4 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
