Alongside a PvE campaign, Overwatch 2 is looking to shake up the hero shooter’s multiplayer in a major way. While there is no shortage of ways to do this, adjusting the playable heroes’ Overwatch 2 kits is certainly one way to make an impact.

Previously, Reinhardt’s Overwatch 2 rework was the only one that has been shown. Given the size of the changes, though, fans have been expecting major adjustments to some of the other heroes in the game. It turns out that this has happened, as two specific characters have seen their weaponry changed. While Reinhardt’s extra fire strike and cancelable charge are massive, the changes to Mei and Winston could be equally impactful in the long term.

Overwatch fans have wanted a proper rework for Mei for some time now, and it seems like they will finally be getting it. The change comes to Mei’s Endothermic Blaster, with her primary fire being the focus of the change. Going forward, the weapon will no longer freeze enemies, with the main fire of the gun instead slowing enemies and dealing extra damage. With many finding the actual freezing of the gun to be unfair, as they cannot move and simply have to wait for their death, this rework should satisfy a majority of the game's fans – though some Mei players may be annoyed.

Aside from a much fairer primary fire for the ice-loving Scientist, fellow genius Winston will be getting access to a brand-new ability. Essentially giving the ape a rail gun shot, charging up Winston’s secondary fire will see him shooting a powerful blast of energy in the direction of enemies. In the clip showcasing the ability, Winston manages to snipe a flying Pharah player out of the sky, showing that the ability deals a lot of damage on top of being accurate. Based on what Blizzard has said about tanks thus far, the Overwatch community can expect more changes like this for the class.

While Mei’s rework is a direct response to the long-running issues gamers have had with her kit, Winston’s seems to be an adjustment made due to the sequel’s new player count. Overwatch 2’s PvP mode will be 5v5, dropping one player in favor of less complex and more aggressive team compositions. This will place a lot of weight on the backs of tanks, and to compensate, they are being given more damage potential to make them more powerful. While they will not do DPS-levels of damage, they will be able to put up more of a fight, with Winston’s long-range alternate fire showing this.

Alongside these reworks, Mei and Winston’s new character designs have been revealed, with both heroes getting some flashy new clothing. With the heroes looking and playing different in the sequel, Overwatch 2 fans have plenty to look forward to.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
