Last year, Twitter user Metro accurately leaked the existence of then-new hero Ashe for Overwatch ahead of her BlizzCon 2019 announcement. Now that same Twitter user, citing anonymous sources, claims to have leaked the first details about the rumored Overwatch 2. According to Metro, Overwatch 2 will be announced at BlizzCon 2019, and it will feature both PvE and PvP elements.

Apparently, Overwatch 2 will be announced with a cinematic video that shows Mei getting saved by a young Genji. Other Overwatch heroes will appear in the cinematic as well, including Tracer and Winston. The Overwatch logo will then appear, followed by the number "2," and a possible appearance by director Jeff Kaplan to discuss the game. While one can likely expect gameplay very similar to the original Overwatch, if Metro's sources are correct, there's going to be some big changes as well.

Besides the aforementioned PvE elements, Metro says that Overwatch 2 is going to have a new leveling system that will impact how players can play their selected hero. An example given was that Tracer's Pulse Bomb could be upgraded so that if she sticks an opponent with it, it will also stick any other units close to that target. This sounds like it would be hugely overpowered in Overwatch's current PvP scene, so we would imagine that stuff like this would be relegated to the PvE side of the equation.

Now the question is, should fans believe Metro's claims? Well, they do have a proven track record of posting accurate Overwatch leaks, but it's possible that they have been given incorrect information or are just making this up. Considering this, it would be wise for fans to take this news with a grain of salt until BlizzCon 2019.

However, it's worth pointing out that this is far from the first time we've heard about a PvE Overwatch 2. In fact, it was leaked months ago by Kotaku's Jason Schreier that Overwatch 2 would be announced at BlizzCon 2019 and would have PvE elements. Schreier also said that people at Blizzard have compared Overwatch 2 to Left 4 Dead, so fans should take that for what they will. It sounds like the game will definitely be a co-op experience, though we'll have to wait for BlizzCon 2019 to find out more.

If Overwatch 2 also has a PvP mode as Metro says, one has to wonder what will happen to the original game. The running theory had been that Overwatch 2 wouldn't replace Overwatch's versus multiplayer, as Blizzard has invested a lot in the Overwatch League and is still supporting it to this day with events like the ongoing Halloween Terror. Maybe Overwatch 2 will simply feature the original Overwatch's PvP. Again, we should find out more information come BlizzCon 2019 on November 1.

Overwatch 2 is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
