Overwatch 2 has had an interesting launch to say the least. On one hand, there are more eyes on the game than there have been in years, with the hero shooter performing well on Twitch and filling its servers with new players thanks to its free-to-play release. On the other hand, numerous technical issues and major controversy around the game’s monetization system have damaged its reputation. With all the discussion about these topics, many have failed to notice one interesting aspect of the Junker Queen section in the hero menu.

For the most part, Junker Queen’s spot in the Overwatch 2 hero lineup has the same exact layout as other characters. Gamers can purchase new outfits, highlight intros, emotes, and so on for the violent leader of the Junkers. A gold weapon can also be unlocked for competitive players. However, one bonus feature is included for Junker Queen: her animated short. This should become the norm for Overwatch, with Blizzard finally giving fans a way to view all the series' lore in-game.

The Other Overwatch Animated Shorts Could Be Added Like Junker Queen’s

It is strange that Junker Queen’s animated short is the only one that is currently featured within the game, especially with Kiriko’s short recently releasing. While an upcoming patch could bring the Kiriko cinematic to the hero menu, and future shorts could also make their way to the actual game, Blizzard should not limit itself to just the animated shorts for the sequel. After all, the original Overwatch had numerous animated shorts that would be worth adding.

Just like Junker Queen’s short is found when players click on her in the hero menu, the animated shorts for other characters could be added to their sections. Soldier 76’s “Hero” short could be featured alongside his cosmetics, as could Widowmaker’s “Alive” cinematic. As for heroes that share a short, like Ashe and Cassidy or Hanzo and Genji, placing the short in both of their individual menus would be a simple solution.

While the Overwatch animated shorts are beautifully animated, many of the characters that did not receive one got a story trailer instead. Characters like Ana, Orisa, and Sigma should have their origin stories viewable in-game, as the one to two-minute teasers did a solid job of establishing their personalities. With Overwatch 2 getting so many people into the series, many may not know of all the shorts and trailers done to promote the game and develop the cast. Making all of this content viewable within the game would allow many more to appreciate it, and it could get newcomers more attached to certain characters.

Overwatch’s Comics and Short Stories Should Make Their Way To The Game

Though Blizzard could keep itself limited to video-related content, Overwatch’s lore has moved beyond a gallery of trailers and short films. There have also been several Overwatch comics and short stories, ranging from Cassidy’s New Blood storyline to one-off tales to Reaper’s Code of Violence. Just like with the Junker Queen animated short, making this content viewable when gamers click on a certain hero would be neat.

Allowing Overwatch’s lore to be viewable from within the game has a benefit beyond being a quality of life feature: it gives players something else to do when finding a match. Though queue times are far better than they were in the final days of the original Overwatch, gamers can still be stuck waiting five minutes to hop into a match. If all the lore became viewable through in-game menus, players could have something to do beyond a Skirmish or browsing their phone while they wait. In the time between matches, they could watch Bastion meet Ganymede or read about Tracer’s heroism in London.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
