Some players opened up Overwatch 2 for the first time and noticed the presence of some legacy credits. Others didn't see them at all. Immediately, players began to theorize why this might have been. Did some players get a special version of the game? Did others pay for them?

There is a rather simple answer to those seeking knowledge of what these credits do and why they exist in Overwatch 2. This explanation is not satisfactory to all gamers, but everybody at least deserves an explanation as to what they are, how to spend them, and if it's possible to acquire more.

Legacy Credits Explanation

Overwatch 2 An Item That Can Be Bought With Legacy Credits

First of all, the bad news: there is no way to purchase any more legacy credits. Because the first Overwatch had players buy currency, the developers couldn't simply delete the entire game without compensating gamers who made purchases of these virtual coins.

Players who had an old account and then changed accounts for Overwatch 2 can still get their old credits if they merge the old and new accounts. However, aside from this, there isn't a way to get more of that currency. And it makes sense since everything is now in the Battle Pass or Item Shop with the new Overwatch Coins.

Spending Legacy Credits

Overwatch 2 How To Find Legacy Credits

These credits aren't there for decoration, they're meant to be spent. Although most of the new cosmetics in Overwatch 2 require unlocking them in the updated method, gamers can use their legacy credits to purchase any of the Overwatch cosmetics that were released during the first game (and a select few items from the new game).

To check the balance, click the information icon by the Overwatch Coin balance in the top right. This will open up a small display that reveals how many legacy credits the player has to their name. Then, find an item with a grey price on it, indicating that legacy credits will work. Then make the purchase! Beware of the bug that automatically spends legacy credits and enjoy a spending spree courtesy of the now-defunct original game.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
