Overwatch 2 has officially been announced at BlizzCon 2019. The sequel to Blizzard's mega-popular shooter series will feature new heroes, a story mode, and plenty more solo content. The gameplay trailer also reveals a new competitive mode for Overwatch 2, called Push.
There has been a lot of information leaked about Overwatch 2 in the days leading up to BlizzCon. A lot of that information has been confirmed with the official reveal of Overwatch 2, but Blizzard will be showing off more of the game in the coming days.
After the intense cinematic trailer, Blizzard showed off a gameplay trailer for Overwatch 2. This gameplay trailer revealed more on the new Story Mode, which will have players fighting the Omnics invasion. In addition, Hero missions will let you play as specific characters and level them up, teaching them new skills and abilities. Those that want to team up with friends outside of a competitive mode will be able to take on co-op missions together. There's a lot for Overwatch 2 players to delve into that is more than just the multiplayer modes from the original.
But for those looking for more multiplayer content, a new PvP mode was also revealed. Called Push, robots will push a payload and teams will have to protect it while it gets to the goal. Arguably a bigger reveal is the new Overwatch 2 hero, Sojourn. Not much was revealed about her during the trailer, but Blizzard assures that she won't be the only new hero for Overwatch 2, and all 31 of the original Overwatch heroes will get a new look.
These new additions for Overwatch 2 are a welcome addition. Before now, Overwatch lore has been limited to videos and novels, and it took a backseat to the multiplayer gameplay. Now, Blizzard is making a big effort to making Overwatch's lore and plot the forefront of the series, while still making sure that the multiplayer aspects of the series are reserved.
With Blizzard ensuring that both Overwatch and Overwatch 2 players will have the same multiplayer experience, it appears Overwatch 2 will be for fans that wanted some solo and co-op content for the series. Overwatch 2 appears to be a halfway point between an expansion and full sequel, and this effort may end up pleasing everyone.
Overwatch 2 is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
